I totally agree. We need a lot more infrastructure. But well alot is getting done in road works in qld at the moment.

just stillw e need more especially witht he rail. The rail in brisbane is absolutely shocking. However the bus network is fantastic - yet a little overcrowded....

There are serious water shortages in every Australian city right now. The Murray river, and the whole inland waterway system is drying up, and has not flowed right to the sea in many years.

We will be fine with water. We're building desalination plants here tehre and everywhere. We're extending a current dam in qld and making it freaking huge. There is also a desalination plant that has been built but the pipes are rusting hahahaha i dont get it... idiots...

im sure South Australia is and same as the Northern Territory- building desalination plants. same as New South Wales too...

Hell... I'll never understand why we dont just build desalination plants around australia and pump it inland by using solar power stations that would only pump the water when there is of course light;-P Pump it down the rivers, get them things flowing...

As well as water shortages and lack of infrastructure, we also have a lack of habitable land.

2/3rds of Oz is pretty much desert, and 97% of the population are on the coast. Our cities can only sustain so many people, and urban sprawl can not just continue.

It is a scary scenario, maybe its time to curb immigration? Not saying stop it, but maybe restrict the number of immigrants we take in, each year?

Just to clear up a few of the topics that have been mentioned in this thread.

Current Water Supply.

Our dam levels have risen greatly over the last few months (QLD Dam Levels). Water restrictions have been eased, and in the case of queensland have been replaced by a permanent water management and appropriate usage guidelines that revolve around appropriate water usage on a per person basis. There is a desalination plant targeted for Sydney.

There are also several untapped ground water supplies around the country. (Sorry couldn't find a link)

The issue with the Great Artesian Basin is that there are still an unknown number of untapped bores that are draining it at an alarming rate.

I could go on, but its starting to get off topic. But lets just say that we are in no real danger of running out of water. Especially when the national water grid is completed.


infrastructure

This situation has improved greatly over the last few years. In all aspects except for inner-city peak-time traffic.

Unfortunately, the Australian government has always had a 'build the minimum required' kind of attitude when it comes infrastructure spending. - They could learn something from Dubai.

paying for babies

The previous government implemented a 'baby bonus' scheme to encourage a surge in population. This was mainly due to the fact that they realised that with the ageing population of 'the baby boomers' there wouldn't be enough tax payers around to cover the cost of healthcare and pensions.

skilled immigration

the issue here is that the policy has given a surge in trading centres bringing over foreign (mainly Indian) students, and these centres are not regulated as you would assume they should be. This has given a great black market for paid accreditation scams

Yeah, sure we can fit millions more here. IF our governments were more accountable and didn't plan only for the short time they are often in power. IF innovative ideas for sustainable resource use were supported so they didn't have to sell out to overseas interests to support themselves and their families. IF our ecosystems and biodiversity wasn't becoming more and more degraded at a shocking rate, mainly because growth is happening too fast to allow for careful future planning. Do we want our major cities to resemble Hong Kong?
Sure our population is aging, but the baby bonus payment encouraged a lot of kids to have kids...just for the money.
Yes water is an issue. The evaporation rate is higher than the precipitation rate and the Qld govt. want to build a shallow dam. Nonsensical.
We have a lot of incredibly intellegent people in this country, from all walks of life and every corner of the globe, which is what makes this country so rich and vibrant. It's the politics and forces exerted by powers in other countries that stimies our development.
Maybe the Fed. govt. want to build big armies to compete and get some power back...thus growth growth growth.

open (just like america), then they took away your guns
(we're still waiting for that) and now look at the fine mess
your "leaders" have left you with.
