Children with depression in these numbers are insane. And makes me wonder if all these years of fluoride and prescription drugs and additives in our food is not only affecting our bodies, but our offspring.

Prozac ... for kids? That's deplorable, 100% awful.

After all these years of medical advancements, this is the best we can do?

This is not the age of enlightenment.

You are right nutrition and toxins do have a big part in how our brain functions......but for most it can be summed up with one word...disfuntion, most likely generational.

I agree that sooooo many drugs perscribed are not benificail and may cause more harm than good. 6 months ago my son had problems with his bladder, he was always going to the bathroom but could never pee. I assumed it was because he was always playing with himself and when he felt stuff going on down there he assumed it was cause he had to pee. He had a few really tough days and the poor boy was miserable and always in the bathroom so I took him to the doctor. The doctor gave him a perscription for ditropan because he said my son was having bladder spasms. He said be careful and watch him closley because this drug can cause him not to sweat and he could get a stroke. I asked the doctor what would happen if I didn't give him the RX to which he replied well, its been going on for a while now right. Yes I said. He said why wouldn't you?
I looked up the info online and saw how many side affects there were including hallucinations(prominant in peadiatric cases), nausea, palpitations, rapid heartbeat, restlessness, confusion, nervousness, insomnia, weakness plus the decreased sweating and possible stroke. It was may and very hot here in GA and I wasn't about to put my kid on stuff that could casue a stroke or hallucinations. So, I trashed the rx and got onto him everytime I saw him playing with himself and wala, he's perfectly fine about a week later.
I think doctors are too quick to treat the symptoms and not really get to the bottom of things. My kids life is way too precious.

What you're describing is called "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy" and it works as well as just taking anti-depressant drugs in lots of people. However, in an adult, the combination of CBT and drugs is more effective than either one alone.

[edit on 3-9-2009 by Funshinez]

I think i was depressed pre natal
Struggled my whole life in pain. Started medication when i was in twenty's and was on them for 8 years.

Medication only masks symptoms. Typical doctors only treat symptoms not the cause. I was thankfully for the relief from medication but was not satisfied with the side affects and the every increasing or changing of medications to maintain desired affect. The last straw for me was when they wanted to prescribe Lithium because nothing else was working anymore. They said i was BI Polar class II......BS! The cocktail of meds was totally screwing me up.

It wasn't till i actual went to work on the root of the problems till i truly found happiness. To change the way we feel we must change the way we think. Change the way we think and change our behavior.

Easier said than done. But with a lot of self help CBT, constant searching, and hard work i have been med free for over two years and have never in my life felt this complete and at peace. But i tell ya withdrawing from ssri and benzo's was a bitch. That is a conspiracy in itself. %&^*%$&*^ Pharma companies.

Meds have there place......to provide a short term buffer for the real healing to begin. Behavioral Therapy.

But i tell you when people would say things like " you just have to look at the Bright side." I wanted to punch them right in the throat.

Funny thing is they were right, its all about perspective and retraining your thought patterns. Because from the womb i was programed wrong.

And we have generational dysfunction to thank for that....and it only gets worse folks from generation to generation. Thats why there are so many screwed up kids.

That why this earth needs to be cleansed.

Drugging our children to death

(HealthNewsDigest.com) - In Massachusetts, a four-year-old girl named Rebecca became the center of a murder investigation after being found dead from an overdose of a dangerous combination of drugs. Both her parents and psychiatrist are facing criminal prosecution and will stand trial later this year.

In Florida, a seven-year-old boy named Gabriel made headlines because he hanged himself with a shower hose in his foster home. It was later discovered that the boy was on an unauthorized cocktail of psychiatric drugs while in the state’s protective custody. He had been taken from his mother who was herself deemed a danger to the child because of drug addiction.

In Texas, a fourteen-year-old boy named Matthew died suddenly after only 29 days of being on a powerful stimulant for ADHD. His devastated parents are suing the drug manufacturer and were recently interviewed on ABC’s “Good Morning America”.

Also from your link:

A major news outlet reported that the results of a controversial long-term trial on the atypical antipsychotic, Seroquel, known as Study 15, had been buried by drug makers. The fact that the average patient taking Seroquel gained eleven pounds in one year was successfully hidden for many years. Details of Study 15 finally emerged as lawsuits began playing out in courtrooms around the country. These suits alleged that Seroquel caused excessive weight gain, hyperglycemia and diabetes in thousands of patients. Many of the 9,200 plus lawsuits filed were on behalf of children.

A national newspaper profiled a prominent Harvard psychiatrist, Joseph Biederman, whose claim to fame was the popularization of bipolar disorder in adolescents and children. Biederman’s research contributed to a forty-fold increase in the diagnoses of pediatric bipolar disorder from 1994 to 2003. However, his recent publicity centered on his failure to report nearly $1.6 million in pharmaceutical manufacturers’ consulting fees he collected from the years 2000 to 2007.

People suffering from anxiety, panic, stress and depression should consult a specialist and only then should use the medicine, as there can be various reasons behind the disorder. Medicines used to cure such disorders are habit forming and should be used for small duration. As per my personal experience, I have used Xanax and it helped me in getting over my panic and anxiety disorder. You can have all necessary information about this on www.xanax-effects.com... Along with medicine, the concerned person should take a break from his/her regular schedule, go out and take good sleep.

They know that there is a way the world is supposed to be, and a magnificent role for themselves in that more beautiful world. Broken to the lesser lives we offer them, they react with hostility, rage, cynicism, depression, escapism, or self-destruction—all the defining qualities of modern adolescence. Then we blame them for not bringing these qualities under control, and when they finally have given up their idealism we call them mature. Having given up their idealism, they can get on with the business of survival: practicality and security, comfort and safety, which is what we are left with in the absence of purpose. So we suggest they major in something practical, stay out of trouble, don't take risks, build a résumé. We think we are practical and wise in the ways of the world. Really we are just broken and afraid. We are afraid on their behalf, and, less nobly, we are afraid of what their idealism shows us: the plunder and betrayal of our own youthful possibilities.

“It’s a sorry story you have there, a story of hopelessness and futility, a story in which there is literally nothing to be done.

Man is flawed, so he keeps on screwing up what should be paradise, and there’s nothing you can do about it. You don’t know how to live so as to stop screwing up paradise, and there’s nothing you can do about that. So there you are, rushing headlong toward catastrophe, and all you can do is watch it come.”

“Yes, that’s the way it seems.”

“With nothing but this wretched story to enact, it’s no wonder so many of you spend your lives stoned on drugs or booze or television. It’s no wonder so many of you go mad or become suicidal.”

Here's a link to a site by Dr Peter Breggin. Just over halfway down the page is an article about drugs and their effect on children with ADHD. I couldn't link directly to it - I found myself downloading it.

breggin.com...

The reason I mention him is because I have a book - Everything You Know is Wrong - which contains an article written by Dr Breggin in which he discusses the drugging of children. My book was published in 2003 and the article written, I think, a couple of years before that.

That long ago, part of the article says: "A recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association by Zito and her colleagues has demonstrated a three-fold increase in the prescription of stimulants to 2 to 4 year old toddlers".

I think there's another problem that this article didn't address. The number of people who ABUSE prescription drugs as they would a narcotic is higher than ever and many of those people are young. The problem is that our society has created this myth that prescription drugs are safe and "illegal" drugs aren't.

I've known a great number of people who's parents had put them on medication while in High School or earlier, hell, my parents tried it too. A lot of these kids starting abusing prescription pills like Oxycodon (sp?) and other synthetic opiates, muscle relaxers, pain relievers etc because they've been programmed to think that these things won't hurt you. It's not a far leap to realize that synthetic opiates are the same as heroin except heroin is cheaper. I've seen it happen plenty of times to people i was close to.

The problem of over prescription comes from a lack of understanding of children and rampant prescription over use by parents and teachers. I was talking about it today, the entire time I was in school no one ever once thought that I was acting the way I was because things were messed up back home. But at 13 you can't really blame a child for acting out in the same way you would blame a 42 year old. When you come across a "problem child" 9 times out of 10 it's the parents who need the therapy.

I got sent to so many doctors, therapist, psychiatrists, psychologist and guidance counselors I can't even count them on. I was prescribed every possible drug you can think of, some being the opposite of others, they'd take me off anti-depressants and put me on anti-psychotics. But if there had been just ONE person with the insight to suggest that my behavior was a result of my mom's alcoholism and my dad's aloofness then things would've actually gotten better!!

Bottom line, prescription pills are worthless, it's voluntary brain washing, the population needing psychiatric medication is at best 10%. Prescription pills, and all the "treatment" leading up to getting your prescription, are just another big business which cares very little for individual effects on specific customers.

I'm so sorry for you and the other posters who have shared their stories of depression.

I do think your experience highlights the crux of the argument made by many of the posters in this thread - Generally speaking, parents are not taking responsibility.

We have a generation of children being raised by lazy, self-absorbed and, in many cases, depressed or addicted parents who are literally infecting their children with dysfunction. To those who it may help, just know that although you can't change your past, you do control your future.

I wonder who decides a little child is depressed.
I got a free DVD from my local shop called 'Making a Killing' it is available on You tube, suggest everyone worried about over medicaton should watch it. One thing sticks in my mind a physiatrist saying "With drugs we will get people behaving and thinking how we want them to"

I have been depressed the pills cover up the real reason, I ended up having two cardiac arrests through to strong medication.
Saying that I know there are some folk who need help such as those with bipolar disorder, trouble is it is simpler and cheaper for health care workers to dish out a pill than sitting talking about a problem plus they have the pharmasutical industry breathing down their necks.

First of all note this: "EMOTION IS THE GRANDFATHER OF ACTION."
OR "FEELINGS DICTATE BEHAVIOR."
There fore the root of the problem is unexpressed feelings and emotions. Help the person go back in time and identify, verbalize and express those buried feelings and emotions, and instantly, the thinking and behavior will change.
