Today I was sitting here at my computer when I start hearing these loud booms, and I run outside and saw what looked like a huge jet flying away. I barely caught a glimpse, but there was also a large helicopter pretty low to the ground going in the same direction. I heard this for maybe 45 seconds before running outside and seeing the helicopter. I talked to my friend who lives closeby and he said they were probably doing practice missions. This has NEVER happened here before...we do have a state police training facility nearby so sometimes hear test fireshots at their range, but nothing even remotely like this.

I was just wondering if anyone else experienced similar things in their areas...

Where did this happen? I saw a lone fighter jet hauling a@@ way out from where it should have been in central texas. Thought that kind of weird, and possibly chasing something?

Sounds like exercises. I used to work at a combined military/ civilian airport, obsrving weather there. Often there were military exercises which occasionally drifted partially over residential areas.

I used to live by an N.A.S...it was funny, but you could almost predict wars based on their increased training actions...do you have any bases nearby?

im in quebec city, and we have the valcartier army base nearby. but they dont really have an airfield, (they use the local airport i think). It is rare, but they do fly over once every 5 weeks or so. one day there was 3 flyovers in less than 15 minutes. Isnt that against the geneva convention or something.

A couple month ago, one flew over, fairly low, and I noticed it was flying with payload on one side only. I thought that this was wierd since wouldnt taking off with one side heavier than the other was not safe?

I hate hearing those jets fly over. I always run out to see it. in april i saw a huge cargo plane fly low over my house ( i was in the downtown area looking out over the valley)

more than usual, i would say no, but there should be laws against military flights over residential areas. should be banned. they can practice over the forest.

I heard some jets today as well. Pretty close over head, but no helicopters.

It's nothing new, but it's by no means common. I also thought there might have been an airshow based on the activity. But I don't know if there is.

I live in Portland Oregon.

I'm in central Connecticut - and as far as I know there are no military bases here except a submarine base down on the shoreline, about 50+ miles away from my home, which was why I thought it was so strange...I can't figure out why theyd train here of all palces

thanks for the input guys!

Well, I remember from my dad being in the Air Force that they transport planes around all the time for repair or to send pilots from one base to another. Depending on schedules, they can go supersonic, but they have to get prior clearance.

Were there any NASCAR races in your area? LOL, sorry, that may sound funny, but in my area when they have big races in town, they always have 3 fighter jets that fly over.

# freaks me out.

I live near McChord AFB (about 16 miles away) and Fort Lewis in Washington State. I think I would actually be surprised if I didn't see and hear C17 Globemaster III's and Chinooks and Blackhawks flying directly over my house every few hours or so. You just get used to it. It all comes with the territory of living near a military base. I believe the only rule against flying over residential areas is that you can't go sonic. You probably don't have anything to get worried about.

Miraj - Portland is home to the 142nd fighter wing of the Oregon Air National Guard. They are based on 240+ acres of land leased from the Portland International Airport. It may not be "common", but even I have seen the F-15's flying out of the airport in Portland and I'm just an occasional visitor to Oregon. I'm actually going to spend a weekend at Cannon Beach in a few weeks - maybe there will be some F-15's in the air then.

Training missions ?! Oh, I guess that covers it. Had one fly over this morning. Very inconsiderate. Amazing how airliners can land at DIA all day long ( noise abatement )but military jets have a need to fly over densely populated areas low and loud. But hey, it's ok their on a training mission. Sorry but Unacceptable. Air Force one and fighter escort over NYC, low and loud, hummmmm .......... "Training mission" Just one more insult.
