I think what we need is balance. You're right - many of the scary scenarios people paint here are unreasonable, highly unlikely. They are scary monster stories that they tell, maybe for amusement, maybe because they really believe them - but they're just scary monster stories.

The government is not wholly benign. It needs to be watched carefully and kept in check, or it will become a truly scary monster. This applies to any government, not just the US Government. People need to ensure that their governments don't become dictatorships.

On the other hand, you can't live in a constant state of Armageddon. That's unhealthy and ultimately futile. If you're really going to lose the world so badly, then there's not much to do about it. But that's not likely, especially if you work to keep things from heading too far in that direction.

I think some folks kind of like the idea of Armageddon. Maybe their lives are boring or unsatisfactory. Maybe they can't seem to get a ahead the way things are now, I don't know. I know I can't seem to get ahead. But for some people, a major upheaval, a time when survival may be difficult, sounds like it might almost be fun, like they're eager for the challenge and the thrill of it. There would be a certain lawlessness to it, a time when sheer guts and manly skills would be needed to get through, opportunities to be a hero perhaps.

Or maybe they really are just very worried that things will get so bad that survival will be difficult, that law will break down and there will be riots, chaos, mass deaths as people starve and freeze, unti there are only a few, tough, determined people left alive, the ones who were smart enough to see this coming and bold enough to do something about it.

Personally, I think we're in some difficult times, and they may get a little worse before they start getting better. I've already seen worse, and others have seen the Great Depression. I don't see that it would get any worse than that, but... I could always be wrong. But really, we've had tough times before, and we'll have them again. It's part of life. Things go up and down, good times and bad, and most of the time you don't see society break down into chaos. Once every few hundred years, maybe, but I don't see it happening just yet. We've got a long way to go before that happens.

The flu thing won't amount to a hill of beans, even if we get the dreaded pandemic. More than 99% of us will survive that flu, if it hits. We'll survive the vaccine, even if they force it on us, which they probably won't do. We'll survive the quarantines that probably will never happen. We'll get through the financial crunch, with or without our houses. Most of us will manage to keep a roof over our heads and food in our bellies, even if we might not be able to afford anything too fancy. There aren't going to be any foreign troops taking over our country. We don't even allow our own troops to operate here most of the time, much less UN or WTO troops. The FEMA "camps" won't do much, except maybe provide some trailers if some areas get hit by floods or hurricanes or earthquakes or volcanoes.

December 21, 2012, will come and go without much fanfare, other than the usual Christmas preparations. The global meltdown will come and go, as other meltdowns have happened.

We're probably not going to see a revolution or a civil war, unless a whole bunch of people et stampeded into it by scary monster stories. Most people know better than to believe the scary monster stories anyway. Most people, despite what many say, have more to lose in an upheaval, than they do by maintaining the status quo. You can bet the Government makes sure of that.
