Would It Be Useful To Have A "Spell Check" In the Reply Function?

I did not see anyone esle post this so I will. I am useing IE7 and
www.iespell.com...
It works great for me.

One that would be particularly usefull in this situation has big bold letters on the front, and the edge that doesn't open up that says "Dictionary".

There is another even more useful called a "Thesaurus", if you do not have one on your bookshelf you can use the online version here.

I would be interested to get a comment from ATS staff or a tech-savvy member regarding how technically difficult it would be to implement an integrated spell check.

there's always an edit button and people willing to tell them they cant understand wat they mean.

The point about dislexia is a good 1, but surely anyone who has it will already be using some form of spell check locally? If they dont, then that in itself is an indication as to what they're like... I'd submit that this is also true of those who feel that their education relating to spelling &/or English usage is deficient. A sincere desire to communicate will prompt the use of aides; waffling for the sake of it will show up in laziness.
If I need to post in a foreign language, I always use whatever help I have available. If it's a language I have very little facility with, I also apologise in advance for the inevitable mess.
Tell you what I'd love to see server-side tho, is an automatic strawman checker, with built in points removal!

I've been resisting it for years.

I knew something was checking my spelling in my replies in Firefox, but I didn't know what it was. I've only noticed it on this site so I thought it did have something to do with ATS, but apparently it's built into Firefox. It's strange I haven't seen it work on other sites though.....

It's Chrome I'm resisting, it may be a little faster than Firefox, but Google is already a little too much of a big and powerful "big brother" without taking over my browser too, plus I use a lot of cool add-ons for firefox that I can't get on other browsers.

You don't have a mouse or trackball? no wonder you spell like a 2 year old.

When I see your text in firefox it is all underlined with a red line, all you have to do is right click the underlined text and it will give option to fix the spelling.

Unless you are the age you spell at, in which case you have my sympathy

Firefox does spell checking automatically built in. If you don't use it then don't whine.

Yes I posted a screenshot so anyone not using Firefox can see what it looks like for me. I right clicked the mis-spelled wel and got several options to choose from.



I think ATS should send me a mental probe to identify which word I really meant by reading my mind, which will then use ATS customized software to automatically select the correct choice from the list so I don't have to choose it from the list.

Actually in 50 years there probably will be more context sensitive spell checking, but I guess we're stuck with picking words from a list in the meantime.

My spelling is fine. I spend much of my professional life writing complex business & technology reports to an audience that will nail me if they find errors (sometimes I think that's their favourite pastime!).

In my post, I was intentionally spelling words incorrectly with a view to having Firefox correct the mistakes. For some reason I cannot fathom, the corrections make absolutely no sense.

However, I didn't want to turn this into a remedial Firefox training thread.

BTW.....why did you assume I had no trackball or mouse?

Wow yours looks completely different than mine, doesn't it? Some things we could compare notes on, I:

-am using Firefox version 3.0.10. Same version for you?
-also have MS office installed. Could the Office spell checker be at work on mine instead of the default checker built into Firefox?

I've never seen any underlines go across 2 or more words like yours do, I don't really understand that. For me it only underlines one word at a time. I hope you can figure it out because it works reasonably well if you can get it working. Good luck.

When I post a reply any word that is misspelled is highlighted. Maybe they just don't take the time to fix their errors. I know if I see a post and it looks like it is a mangled mess I don't even try to read it. I agree it does not look good to have those types of replies on here.

I am assuming you are trying to type in English and those words do not look like English so you probably would, at the very least, have to be in the right ballpark as far as the spelling for it to be able to fix that mess.

Since FF spell checker is for spelling and not necessarily grammar, it misses the nuances between your & you're; their, there and they're; it's (it is) and its (possessive). I've had the spell checker call me out on correctly spelled words often enough, most recently 'patrilinear'.

As you can see, it didn't work "really well".

It's this sort of problem that motivated me to post this thread about an "easy", integrated spell-check as part of the ATS reply area.

Where it would be great to have as a tool, I even remade a remark about it in one of my threads in which I misspelled the title (time had expired could not change it, and is still misspelled) before rethinking it after a few comments. It would however, slow the performance of the site down considerably.

If you consider in all of the posters who post in each of the forums, and under each thread in those forums, having spell check working on all of those simultaneous posts, you would think you were on dial up it would be so bad, possibly even worse.

Yes you might not have all users simultaneously posting, and spell checking at the same time, but all worse case scenarios must be taken into consideration before implementing a feature such as this, and even if there is a slim chance that it could happen, that is usually enough to not implement it.

Just wanted to tell you that you can ask a Moderator to correct the title thread for you when it is too late for you to do it yourself. I needed help to do this once and a Mod (Thanks, Intrepid!) was very helpful and corrected the mistake for me.

I have thought about that, I just figure there are better things for them to do than correct my error that I should have caught when creating my thread.
