I just finished reading the AOL article with a picture gallery of the news that has stunned us. Yet is it does not appear that we are really stunned any more and least of all shocked.

These headlines are becoming so common place that no one even blinks a eye anymore.

What are we becoming? Is there any hope left for a society that has lost its humanity?

Is there a point of no return?

Still, guessing the gist of it, I'd say that we are over saturated with information. People know it. Listen to how they speak. Does anyone say, "Yeah, I [insert activity here]. It was fairly enjoyable. If you're bored, I'd recommend it."
No. Because they know that it wouldn't register on anyone's radar. It has to be:
"TOTALLY AWESOME!"

I can understand boredom but when people become bored and desensitized to the horrors and atrocities that involve mindless killings, rapes and mutilation, I fear what that means for us as a society as a whole.

Is Mad Max and the Thunderdome our next stop?

Is civilization a thing of the past and we are starting the cycle back towards barbarianism?

It seems every day you can find something that speaks of a world in the throes of madness. I am not going to try to start keeping a diary of the madness. I don't have that kind of time and I don't believe my spirit could survive it, but I just read the post about the Golly doll.

This is not about being different. This is not about racism. This is about impotence.

When people find themselves lost and confused they look for answers and when they are not forth coming they look for scapegoats and anything or anyone will do. If you are not into angels and demons, curses or charms then you start to look for anything you can grab on to.

If everyone looked like clones they would find another way to pick the odd man out. Maybe the one that stepped on a crack or maybe the one that didn't.

It is obvious the madness has begun.

How quickly will it spread?

Is anyone immune?

You know, I dont think the world is getting any more mad than it used to be, its just that we are much more likely to hear about it/see it these days. As for desensitisation, yeah, I expect you're right: the more horror we see, the less it bothers us. This is afterall the essence of the difference between veteran units & fresh troops, in assessing their likely effectiveness.
I cant agree that it'll lead back to barbarism tho. The hallmark of barbaric societies is an absence of information, imo. Horrendous acts get perpetrated because hardly anyone knows that each individual case happened, plus the perpetrators know in advance that that is the case & can thus reasonably expect to get away with it.
I believe that what we are seeing now is entirely new & could lead to a new paradigm entirely.
Still, it could also lead to TPTB clamping down on the freedom of reportage, particularly from private citizens on the net
