So, this is my first thread on ATS, so if this is in the wrong spot, please move it (thanks in advance, mods).

I went to my son's and daughter's open house (my son gets speech therapy at school and my daughter is in 5th grade) and we were told about a new 'safety' system that has been installed throughout the school district. It's called Raptor, and it requires that you swipe your ID through the system in order to access the campus during the school day.

This means, if I need to pick up my kid, then I have to swipe my ID through the system to get access to the office in order to get him or her. Couple this with the fact that I have to pick up my boy at 1045 am because his therapy is done, and this becomes a little more sinister.

I walked up to the administrator, and asked specifically what the Raptor does with my ID information, and was told that it searches state databases in all 50 states in order to ascertain if I am a sex offender in any of the 50 states, and if I am, I can be disbarred from entering the campus to handle any business with my child, like parent-teacher conferences, or early pickup, or anything like that.

As I lay awake explaining this to my wife, who was working and unable to attend the open house, a few things start dawning on me.

1. How much harder is it to link the Raptor to the School District PD, who are authorized to arrest and act as regular police on school campuses, which means if that thing dings and says you got a warrant from Dry Hump, South Dakota, you can be detained and held until the regular PD gets you and begins extradition.

2. If you are being tracked as a person of interest for posting on a flagged site or other such nonsense (*cough, cough*) then will the school PD detain you?

3. General surveillance - who the blank needs to know how many times I have signed in and out of my kid's school? There are times when I came on campus last year just to peek in on my kids and see how they were doing. And if I bring my kids a meal courtesy a restaurant prior to their lunch period, how do I get to deliver it to them without having my data being sent who knows where and risking it getting intercepted or simply flagging me as a person of interest just because my data is being sent around so much?

I'm all for security, but I think that this is going too far - I mean, how far up my butt does security have to go?

I understand completely where you're coming from. However, being the father of 2 girls (9 & 11) I'd rather go through the security hassle knowing any pervs will have to do the same.....their small country school has no PD on site and it seems that anybody could just walk right in and do whatever.
