The Missing S

I haven’t seen that S in awhile! I learned how to draw it in elementary school and used it extensively until the middle school years. Not sure of the origins, but it seems to be apart of what I call Kidlore (legends, tales, myths , & customs, etc. of children). Interesting thread.

We always called it the "Superman S"

But yep, fun to draw. We used to put it all over the place, especially on the desks.

It is really odd that all of you have drawn this in the past and have no idea why. Do all of your names have an S initial...first or last?

Because I have never even see that S symbol...but when I saw it in this post...I wanted to go try to draw it for some reason. Not only that...I thought it would be neat to teach my 5 year old to draw it. Why would I think that...it is creepy.

Now seeing all of your replies on you drawing it all over the place and having no idea why...I don't think I want to anymore.

I remember drawing spiral shapes, star shapes, and faces all over my books...but never this S shape.

This is really a neat topic...hope more informaiton comes out on it.

Good theory, but as I sit and think about the people I associated with in elementary school, neither them nor I, have any S's for first or last names. I am sure this is likely unique with me, just a coincidence.

I don't know why we all started drawing it, or how we all knew of it separated by distance and time... but one thing was as you mentioned, it looks enjoyable to draw. And it's very simple, a few lines, and connect the dots and voila you got a bad ass "S" .. for grade 3 standards anyways..

I really do hope someone can figure this out. The only common link we all could have had would likely have been TV. So perhaps it was on a TV show at some point and it just spread like wildfire. Other than that, I cannot' really concoct a probable theory.

I remember a friend showing me how to draw it in about grade 3ish, 20 some years ago.
Since my first and last initials start with "S" I took to it quite readily.

Last time I used it was a couple years ago when I showed my oldest daughter how to draw it. Coincidentaly, she was around about the same age as me when I learned it.

I'm not sure of it's meaning or it's origins but I know it was common up here in Canada. At least for a time.

So I tried looking this damn thing up, with meager results I headed to youtube where I found the following video.

Apparently, this is a teacher recording himself drawing the "S" for his students. He claims that he has taught in suburbs all over America and this is still going strong.

Im in Canada, and im sure it's still going on here too. Then it struck me, this magical "S" has more staying power than practically any pop-fad ever. All bow to its power. And go draw an S in tribute.

I did some looking too. All I could find was a tutorial on how to draw it...but no explanation besides it's an S (or an 8) you can draw with all straight lines.

not sure if that is accurate or not...

Stussi is an old california surf style clothing..probably originated in hawaii or something...
