So, the Russian, UK, US, French and Spanish can't find it with satellite, ships ect, but we have located it on a website?

Has anyone got Putin's phone number i need to ring him and give him the URL. Ridiculous!

It gets stranger by the minute, perhaps the signal is a decoy to keep the fleet going around in circles till they, who ever they are, finish what there doing?

Surely if they had reports it was near Cape Verde they could swing a satellite round and take some snaps far quicker than what a ship would take to sail there and identify it?

Yes i do have his cell number, will i post such a thing, its highly unlikely.

In reference to my post and one after, yes it has been boarded and no it has not been mentioned but then again many hours have past.

But hey, green lights were authorized throughout NATO, so it was a turkey shoot. Enough of the drama.

You do know how Russian roulette is played right ?

Latest news from KRP (Finnish Central Criminal Police). Highest Police auhtority in Finland, pretty similar than Criminal Investigation Department in England.

KRP has commented that Arctic Sea-case has been very widely investigated from very early stage co-operating with Swedish Police, Interpol and Europol. So far there has been different level of co-operating investigation with over 20 different countries. KRP also commented: "investigation is focused on very serious blackmail and hijack. Nothing further cannot be commented at this point"

This just came up, KRP Press release on english:
www.keskusrikospoliisi.fi...

And now its official. KRP has just told that hijackers has send demanding about ransoms to shipowner operating company in Finland.

hey
i know its a bit off topic but every time there is terrorist scare
we end up hearing about the "dirty bomb" scenario
but its basically a myth and any potential impact the weapon has
more from panic than radiation
Richard A Muller (a technology reviewer for MIT) writes:

"That will result in a radioactivity of 1.4 millicuries per square meter, and a careful calculation shows that residents will get a dose of 140 rems per year. But radiation illness is nonlinear. For extended exposures, the lethal dose increases by the fourth root of time, to approximately 1,250 rems for a one-year exposure and 2,500 rems for a 16-year exposure. So 140 rems per year is not enough to trigger radiation illness, even if you stayed there 24/7 for a decade. Radioactive contamination may be the one case for which the solution to pollution really is dilution."

you can read the full article here:
www.technologyreview.com...

again sorry to drift off topic but i get a bit tired of always hearing
about the big threat of a "dirty bomb"

ps. great thread!

The authorities have not been able to confirm the alleged hijacking, and the connection between the alleged incident and the later events has not been established yet.

Um, alleged and unconfirmed, still no closer to an answer, when I read your post I thought the hijacker's had been in contact. Guess not, and there's no mention of the alleged second boarding?

Enough bulls.t, get a few RAF Nimrods out there and theyd soon find this ship in a matter of hours. Russians cant do anything right with a aging fleet and submarines UNDER the sea who are about as clueless as the boats on the surface.

if it is extortion and hi jacking then i would imagine the stans are involved somewhere along the line .
finland borders russia and estonia is only across the gulf of finland.
the cargo is worth peanuts and the ship cant be that valuable.
one thing for sure i would imagine european forces will take a hard stand against this sort of thing to prevent it happening again.
zero tolerance against hijackers is one thing old maggie got right and it worked

Not unconfirmed. KRP has confirmed this to Helsingin Sanomat.
Maybe takes couple of minutes/hours when this is coming to english news.

Ugh!
My head is spinning from all of the re-gurgitated nonsense that's clogging up the discussion and blurring the known facts.

The Arctic Sea is still officially missing.
It was "suspected" as having been seen off Cape Verde Islands, but this has not been properly confirmed.
This sighting, as I mentioned earlier, has filtered down from one report, first posted by Financial Times Deutchland, which admitted at the time that it was un-confirmed.

The tracking systems on the Arctic Sea, have apparently been switched off since 29th July. Thats when it dropped off the marinetraffic.com tracking system, which can be viwed "live" at the web address previously posted.
It dropped off their tracking system in the middle of the far western entrance of the English channel, between Plymouth England, and Brest France.
It has been reported that it was tracked by the French authorities after this (to 30th July?) but I have been unable to confirm this.
There were certainly NO CONFIRMED SIGHTINGS or trackings, between 30th July and 14th August.
The Spanish and Portuguese authorities both say that it was not tracked into their territory. (This could just be because the tracking systems on-board are switched off, but we don't know!)
The marinetraffic.com tracking system DID get one single signal on 15th Aug, and I quote from their site;

"Position Recorded on: 8/15/2009 8:25:17 AM (UTC)
Lon/Lat: -6.757967 / 46.093201
Speed/Course: 10.3 kn / 214°"

This puts the Signal, (not necessarily the vessel!)in the middle of the Bay of Biscay, about 250 miles due west of La Rochelle France, some 140 miles north of the Spanish mainland.

PLEASE also remember that the reports of the boarding or boardings have come in the form of one (or possibly two, but unconfirmed) radio communications, which may or MAY NOT have been from the crew.

I stand by my earlier theory, that the ship has a hidden cargo, probably nukes from Kaliningrad. Hidden and shielded by whatever was installed in the Kaliningrad dockyards, in the two weeks prior to being loaded with timber in Finland.
The US/UK heard about this. Sent a special forces team in to investigate. Disabled the crew and comms. Found the nukes. Off-loaded the tracking systems onto another vessel. Re-painted and gave a new identity to the Arctic Sea.
Quietly moved the disguised Arctic Sea to a US Naval base, probably in a quiet part of UK (Scotland?). Sent the "cover" vessel out of the English channel to keep the Russians (or whoever was responsible) thinking that all was well.
Then, radioed in that they had been boarded. Just before turning off the tracking systems the next day (29th July).
Russia, caught off guard, rushes through new powers to use the Russian fleet to react to acts of "piracy" and immediately sends several warships and subs into the Atlantic, where they have been led to believe the Arctic Sea now is.
The real cargo meanwhile, is being off-loaded at.... choose the port of your choice... US naval base in Scotland? Northern France Maybe? (Does the US have bases in France?)
Then after several FALSE ALERTS in the media (portuguese spotter plane, Cape Verde coast guard etc.) perhaps even created by the US/UK govts. the unloaded (still disguised) vessel is taken back to the Western end of the English channel, then down to Bay of Biscay.
It is quickly re-painted, and given it's old ID back. Then the tracking beacon (AIS?) is briefly switched on again, to let the russians know where to look.
I'm guessing that the vessel will be found in the next few hours. Crew (witnesses) probably missing.

This whole scenario is of course, just a theory. But it would explain why The UK/US appear to be doing nothing, while the Russians go crazy trying to find a timber freighter.

Time will tell, but I bet we never get to know the truth.

Wild theory. I don't personally think it's something so complex and the involvement of nukes is another thing I don't believe. Not bad theory, but not for me

Amazing ! What can we possibly make out of that ?

As I am typing, I have just heard on a French radio, the company hiring the ship is asked for a ransom !!! No more specific info.
Weirder and weirder. They are writing the scenario step by step while the movie is already on screen.

***UPDATE***
The Marinetraffic.com website has just removed all of the previous itenerary information for Arctic Sea.
This was definitely available yesterday, and showed the complete timeline, exact position, direction of travel etc for the complete time period from leaving Finland, to the last (previous) contact on 29th July.

Pirates demand cargo ship ransom

A ransom demand has been made of the owners of the missing cargo ship believed to have sailed through the English Channel after being boarded by pirates, it was disclosed.

Minimal information at the moment.
What non sense they can come up with !

The ship was attacked 3 weeks ago and they ask for a ransom now ?

It's unbelievable. So that's why the talk of a curious second attack we have heard in the last couple of days... A curious second attack, we still don't have any slight info about.

Agreed!
Why board a vessel in the Baltic...
Sail it through the busiest shipping lane in the world...
Sail around for a couple of weeks...
and then say... "I know! We'll demand a ransom!!"?
Doesn't make sense.

When was the ransom demand actually made then?
Is it a genuine demand? and Who by?
Was it made when vessel was still in the Baltic?
When it went missing after leaving English Channel?
Today?

They'll probably try and spin it, that it happened as a result of the 2nd boarding?

Is one of the funniest and most ridiculous replies I have ever seen on ATS and that is saying something.

You have his cell right? lol

......................................................................................................

I do find this one radio signal strange, would certainly imply that it was done on purpose....

the plot thickens indeed.
