It's actually a very simple formula.

1) Create an environment that encourages interesting discussion
+
2) Make sure it is managed so that the discussion is easy to find
+
3) Put it all on a server that can handle high traffic
+
4) Let the members do the rest

You forgot number 5: Be one of the few forum sites/groups out there (if not the only one !) where divergence of opinion is welcomed, and even applauded.

Have you any idea how unique ATS/BTS is in this respect, SO ? The majority of forums out there will ban without a moments hesitation when somebody posts an extremely passionate point of view on a topic, especially if that opinion differs from the rest of the herd.

The good thing is that it spirals upwards
The more users you get, the more posts you get. The more posts you get, the more different topics you get linking to ATS. The more linking you have to ATS, the more users you have. Repeat ad infinitum

THIS BOARD is taking forever to get on!

Just yesterday I was wondering why it was so slow to get on. There must be A MILLION PEOPLE on here right now!!!

You folks are gonna haf ta start your own electric company. Or something. I remember when it was a zip to get on here, hehehe.

(Camp-plain. Just venting. Needs a few more tents around here. Big ones. Tall ones. Fat ones. Small ones. Just a few more watts of energy and everything'll be dandy)

It's been getting damn slow for me too. I hope the bandwidth isn't maxing out.

Our contract is for 1,000 gigabytes per month of bandwidth... we're using about 1/3 of it right now... no worries (yet). The server is talking a beating though. An additional 1gig of RAM has been ordered as an upgrade and will be installed within 48 hours. Our Dual 2ghz Xeon server can take quite a bit, it just needs more ram to do it. update... [size=10]YIKES! As of this post, we hit 31,562 unique users sessions! With 5 hours remaining in the server's day, we already broke yesterday's amazing record. It looks like we're going to achieve 10,000 board members today.

I love my ATS!

Might do though unlike most sites ATS automatically deletes unused accounts after a short while to keep the membership figures honest.
