Japanese 'robot suit' to help disabled

The suit, called HAL – or Hybrid Assistive Limb – is the work of Cyberdyne Corporation in Japan, and has been created to "upgrade the existing physical capabilities of the human body".

HAL, which weighs 23kg, is comprised of robotic 'limbs', and a backpack containing the suit's battery and computer system. It is strapped to the body and controlled by thought.

WHY ? WHY did that CYBERNETICS company have to pick the VERY same name as the Cybernetics corporation from the Terminator movie?

Cyberdyne (Real World: Japan)

In the Terminator Trilogy. Cyberdyne Systems was the cybernetics company which develops the Terminator robots and Skynet.

Is this just a crazy coincidence? Or something else?

It's always weird with the japanese.
their animes are all white people, but north american anime is japanese looking a lot of the time.
they do it to mess with us.

that being said, this thread is one piece of publicity they otherwise would have never gotten.

And the name of the robot suit? HAL.

It seems the company founders were influenced by a few sci-fi movies.

I agree, they just liked what they saw on the big screen and decided to try and copy it. What better name for your company that is going to make robotic exoskeletons then the name of the company who is responsible for the terminators.

What led you to the development of the 'Robot Suit'?

I read this book called 'I Robot' by Isaac Asimov, when I was in 3rd grade. There appeared a doctor and the robots that the doctor created. The doctor looked as if he was a magician who could create everything out of nothing to me, and always did right things, something beneficial to human beings. 'So cool!!' I though, and made up my mind to be a scientist who creates robots like the doctor when I grew up. I had locked myself in my room, and carried out odd experiments day after day. My brain was swelling with knowledge in electric engineering when I graduated primary school. There was a cartoon on the air at the same time, called 'Cyborg 009' which also influenced me very much. And now, I'm developing the 'Robot Suit' that has both advantages of a robot and a cyborg.

Gee, who would have thought that one of the leading figures in the field of robotics would be a life-long fan of science fiction?

lmao I must say thats pretty trippy! Of all the company names you could make with cyber-something, they choose that! I agree with the other posters who have said they probably purposely chose that name. Thanks for posting.

I love the japanese, they are always coming up with stuff like this. I don't really see anything bad in this, just some inventor/scientist that was inspired by something as a kid. I've always loved technology and hope to go Japan one day, although its expensive as hell!

Wow, that's a great marketing strategy...
Not only is the company named after the one responsible for the end of the world in the Terminator film series, but also naming their new product after what is perhaps the creepiest supercomputer in fiction. Can you say 2001: A Space Odyssey?
Hopefully the names are the only things carried over from their science-fiction counterparts

On another note, the actual robot suit featured is pretty cool. I had heard of it before, but never really paid it too much attention, other than the name. Apparently, it can read biosignals through the skin when you're about to make a movement, and then it is able to match its movements to yours. Also, this suit allows the wearer to lift about 5 times as much as normal.

Wow, very coincidental names. Cool technology though. I bet if Japan were ever allowed to develop a offensive military again, they would produce some pretty wicked augmenting armor or combat robots. Just a thought.
