In late 2006 and early 2007, the preferred direction was that of the active regions of the coming sunspot cycle (Cycle 24), but in late 2008 and early 2009 the preferred direction has been that of the active regions of sunspot cycle 25. These findings are consistent with the results of Wilson et al. (1988) that there is a high latitude expansion of the solar activity
cycle.

Switching magnetic polarities and placement of sunspots is used to tell the difference between cycles. What spots have been seen during this minimum have switched from "cycle 24 " polarity and placement back to "cycle 23" polarity and placement. This is now being interpreted to mean we have had our cycle 24 and now are starting cycle 25. This is what is thought to have happen during the Dalton Minimum (see related links)

Several times in the past 3 years Sunspots have appeared with different magnetic polarity, and every time it was claimed 'this could be it", yet to be found that it was just a false alarm.

Wait a few weeks, and let's see what happens.
