HAUNTING Chinese poems speaking of pain are still visible on the faded walls of the old detention centre on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. The island, today a state park, used to be the West Coast twin of Ellis Island in the east, and is the place where America showed a very different face to yellow newcomers than to white ones. Paul Fong’s grandfather was detained there in 1939.

As America confronts and buries his mistakes and other assorted dead relationships from Europe and the Middle East he also has to go West and apologize to an ancient and faithful friend that never left his side even when he had turned his back.

While other women ate her food, wore her clothes and lived in her house...she toiled in silence knowing that one day the inevitable would occur and his eyes would see the truth.

Saying sorry really isn't that hard after all.
