What is up with Geithner lately?

We haven't heard a peep from him in weeks and then today there are at least two statements (that I know of) from him on totally unrelated to Treasury Department issues.

One on health care: Health Bill May Advance Without Bipartisan Deal
One on raising taxes: Geithner Won't Rule Out New Taxes for Middle Class

He has no say in either of these issues. What is going on? It's as if the President is on vacation something and he's filling in for him. Are they grooming him for something? Or, are they presenting a mouthpiece to take the political pressure from themselves since he's only an appointee and not elected.
