Desperate state may sell Capitol buildings, others

Call it a sign of desperate times: Legislators are considering selling the House and Senate buildings where they've conducted state business for more than 50 years.

Dozens of other state properties also may be sold as the state government faces its worst financial crisis
in a generation, if not ever.

It also may try to contract out the operations of some prisons.

You know things are getting rough for States when they have to sell off government buildings and lease them from the new buyers.

Whoever thought government was in control was not aware that it is the Banks and Investors behind them. Now that government has to make Rental/Lease payments to those who will now own government buildings, it's all the more apparent.

Although it's nice to know that State governments are suffering from this financial crisis as much as the common citizen is. Hopefully it will make them a little more sympathetic and motivate them to do something drastic to jump start the economy.

My only question is how much is the state of Arizona willing to sell the Grand Canyon for? I know this guy who is willing to pay $10/acre and will pay in Cash.

I must say that I am not that surprised. In recent years, there has been a rash of states leasing out toll roads. The Chicago Skyway and the Indiana Turnpike have both been 'privatized', and last time I heard PA, NJ, and FL were investigating leasing out their toll roads. This is the next step.

As deficit spending is rapidly approaching an impasse of credit worthiness, governments from the local to the state level are grasping for any opportunity to bring in some cash to keep their entitlements and pet projects running. Taxation is already so high that any increase is immediately met with anger from the public, and so is any talk of cutting those precious entitlement programs for the public. Add into this mix the spluttering economy, and you have a catch-22.

Check your local governing bodies for the latest updates on fines and court fees, even for minor infractions. I'd bet good money they have increased drastically; I know they have around me.

I have to agree with you that the governments themselves are far less of a threat at this time than the bankers and financial brokers who now control them through financial measures. These bankers got us into the economic mess we find ourselves in, then mortgaged any hope of a full and speedy recovery by getting their own personal retirement account (bailout) passed. Now they are primed and ready to take full possession of the governments they have helped overthrow.

You know, when I was younger, I occasionally had this little fantasy daydream I indulged in. In the daydream, I was so wealthy I owned the very courthouse and therefore was immune to local law enforcement. After all, since I owned the building, I could create extreme havoc at a whim. I could have the place painted deep purple if I wanted. I could conveniently decide to rip up the asphalt in the parking lot for 'repaving'. I could raise the rent!

Yeah, I was a weird child.

Anyway, that was a kid's daydream, but it is now becoming reality. Only it's not me taking over; it's those who have demonstrated time and time again they care nothing for you or me.
