Gene discovery could shed light on Asperger's

Scientists from the University of Cambridge have identified 27 genes associated with either Asperger Syndrome (AS), autistic traits or empathy that could shine some light on the mechanisms behind these conditions.

While all other genetic studies from the autism spectrum have focused on classic autism, which can include learning difficulties and language delay, AS can be considered a 'purer' condition because these other factors are absent.

Some good news for a change, so I thought it certainly well worthy of being brought to 'our,' lets face it, we could do with some uplifting news around here for a change.

More from the source...

[ Professor Simon Baron-Cohen led the research which published in the journal Autism Research with Dr Bhismadev Chakrabarti. He said: "These new results represent a significant advance over our previous work in showing that the sex steroid hormones influence social development and autistic traits.

"The new study also confirms earlier reports that other molecules (such as oxytocin) are important in understanding autism, autistic traits, and empathy."

The research found that 27 out of the 68 genes were nominally associated with either AS and/or with autistic traits/empathy. Ten of these genes were involved with sex steroid function, providing support for the role of this class of genes in autism and autistic traits. ]

It's progress, and a rare piece of something good to hear.
