I came upon this picture, about 10 years ago on the internet- and saved it. I have never found out what it was, or is, and I have always wanted to know more about it. Pardon me if this has already been discussed, however I couldnt find anything on ATS discussing it.

It appears to be a huge eel with the head of a dragon... Does anyone know what it could be? Any ideas?

ATS cut off the end of the tail- so here is a link to the full image

No, I dont remember anything about it. As far as I know there was nothing written about it, or I would of saved it as such. I think I found it on a Crypto site many many years ago. It appears it came out of a book of some kind...

It's called an oarfish. Lampriformes Regalecidae.
That's a very large specimen.

Beat me to it!

I just found it too!

Arrgggh!

Heres the website ugh.

Edit to add: if the one depicted in the pictures you presented are considered the largest, why would this one nearly twice the size not be considered? Seems a bit phony to me.

Wow, well glad I don't live in the depths of the ocean!

Sick or Dying, well that would explain a bit of why there so rare.

Yet another freaky looking creature that exacerbates my fear of oceans.

But interesting.

Nice post!

Freaky looking? Did you check out the shots Phage posted? Here is the link again www.diver.net...

I think this fish is absolutely beautiful! Just look how it shines in the water! And those red 'whiskers' wow! Definitely not freaky looking!

This is an oarfish. Google Oarfish and you will see that's what it is.

Yep, Phage already got it. There are a ton of threads on this same photo, I don't know why...

Sweet fish though.
