First off, how much are you willing to spend?
How serious are you? Is it going to be strictly for your own enjoyment? Or do you have bigger plans?
As far as learning, go find a teacher. It will save you from having to re-invent the wheel several times. Trial and error can be alot of fun, but having someone to help you improve can save you alot of headaches. Unlearning mistakes or bad habits can sometimes be harder than just learning the right way in the first place.

Well, I'm pretty serious on learning, I've been wanting to for quite some time and have lots of dedication...as far as buying one, I have heard that the lower-end guitars are not really worth buying, and if I plan on playing it a lot then I would need to upgrade from one of those anyway...so I was looking at some of the cheaper Martin guitars for around $700, anything more than that would be too much...and I figure that if for some reason I can't play it any longer it probably has good resale value as opposed to really cheap guitars.
Also, I don't know if I really want to take lessons. I have a busy schedule and can't really commute all that much for lessons, much less spend lots of money...it would be better if I could learn at home with a book or video or something, just whenever I have some extra hours to spare. I do have lots of time to play, I just don't know when the time will be, so it would be hard to commit to a scheduled time for lessons. And I also have a few friends who play guitar that I could get help from if need be...thanks for the help
