The Chernobyl Kaptar or Chernobyl Snowman is supposedly a cryptid in the form of a mutated hominid found in the irradiated Zone of Alienation around
the scene of 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Reports indicate it is a misshapen black haired creature with glowing red eyes which is very hostile to humans,
and which has according to rumour been responsible for several deaths of those entering the zone illicitly.
Experts have noted that Russian hominids such as the Kaptar or Almasti are often seen in former radioactive test sites like those in the Ural
mountains so this may indicate they either have a high natural tolerance for radiation or have built up a resistance.
Theories
The stories may be a modern urban legend as the eerie abandoned zone has developed a strong reputation as a haunted area. Some believe the stories
have actually been created by the local authorities as a means of preventing people from entering the radioactive area as preventing break ins and
looters remains a security problem. It also bears some similarity to reports of the Black Bird of Chernobyl.
Tales about this creature are one of the inspirations for the Russian computer game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.
