i don't see it the way you seem to

i see those lawns as a type of Shrine

...see, we take a few moments from the confines of our homes,
classrooms, offices
and either make our way to a green lawn
or just simpily gaze upon a yard or field,
so we may drink-in some the beauty and relax in the momentary
reprieve from the demands of a stark, sometimes hostile, fitfull world.

we...or, some of us...are thankfull & grateful for that brief 'sanctuary'
~~~~~~~~~
of course, your take on the 'greening' is real & true, to an extent....
but, i think, takes a subordinate position to the most beneficial 'Shrine' model....
have a nice day ya'll
~~~~~~~~~

my duties today include 'terra-forming' the front yard,
caring for the Bonzi'd bushes, arranging stones & sand,
maintaining the topriary, sprigging where needed,
enjoy yourselves,

Wow, never though of it. I just mow when told to. But there are entire businesses dedicated to making your lawn green. Also, a "sod" farm is a yard. I have a "sod" farm, it's called a backyard. Greatest scam in the world selling grass, and not even the good kind!

I live in Toronto - stopped using chemicals years ago because of my cats being out in the yard. As far as I know chemicals are outlawed here now. And guess what, my lawn is nice 'n green. If I get a few weeds, I yank 'em out. I'm happy that my animals are safe and I'm not adding to killing the environment further.

People who use chemicals on their lawns, should be forced to drink the run off.
Chemicals are not necessary, and neither is a big piece of wasted front yard.

Replace it with some trees to hold the soil, water the tree, trees provide shade that grass never will, composting the leaves will provide natural fertilizer, extra bonus if you choose a fruit tree, free food.

My parents let the weeds take over the yard ages ago, and just mow them, guess what, the lawn is green 365 days a year, through snow and frost and all, while the neighbors chemically treated grass is only green for a few months, and of course is untouchable because of the chemicals.

Somewhere along the line we were invaded by green onions, these grow about two and half feet tall and stay green all winter too. Its great to see green poking out of a foot of snow, and its edible.

Hats off to anyone who does their own landscaping/gardening with absolute minimal chemical usage.
Such actions do actually make human civilization somewhat redeemable.

Ever stop to think people may want green lawns so it looks healthy and respectable?

Probably not.
