November 2009 - Secret Military Air Force Base P27 - Confidential Location

President Obama seats at a table with distinguished military officials and government representatives. Among them Miss Audrey Burns of the biological task force, Lleyton Williams the NATO delegate and Umberto Potenza, the theologian from the Vatican.

Professor Brown from the Navy intelligence enters the room. "Ladies and gentlemen, you have never seen me and this meeting has never taken place. Nothing has happened in this room that you will remember."

Brown takes a remote and pushes a button. The wall behind him opens and a glass panel with a room appears behind.

Brown continues, "Test subject Zebra Tango 1. After prolonged exposition to gamma wave the genetic pattern of the subject a considerably mutated. We know very little about the implication of such mutations. Here is model 843 after exposition since symbiosis. The model is approximately 18 months old."

Brown pushes a button and the floor in the room behind the glass panels opens. And elevator brings up a grown up human man chained to the floor.

President Obama looks at Brown with stupefaction. "What is that? We told you no more torture of the Arabs. What are you doing with this man?"

Brown replies with a smirk. "No Barack he's not only an Arab. He's a mutant who just happens to have an Arab genetic background. But it's the mutant part that interests us. Now watch"

Brown pushes another button and the mutant starts to get agitated. "Intense electromagnetic interference pattern makes the mutant..."

The mutant breaks out of his chains.

Brown, "Uncontrollable."

The mutant rushes to the window and starts punching it. It tries to looks through the window and punches again.

Obama, "Can he see us?"

Brown, "No those glass are tainted. But can he sense us? That's another thing."

Brown pushes the remote again and a 30mm Gatling gun on the ceiling of the room locks the mutant. Brown continues, "This model has never been taught anything. It has only be fed and kept alive. We can't even take the risk to grow one since the Tunguska incident. We have no clue has to what would happen if something like this was released in the streets."

Brown walks to the glass panel about to break and puts the remote on the head of the creature. And pushes the button as the creature tries to looks through the wall it has made. Brown goes on, "Model 843 is no more. People this is more important than democracy. Without mankind there is no democracy. Survival is a military requirement."

All the people seated are absolutely terrified.

Brown close the wall panel with another push on the remote and adds, "You are thus continuously revoked of you operative titles and under mandate of the Navy. You will receive your orders via phone in due time. Project Rainbow is no longer. Project Indigo is a go!"

Audrey Burns steps in, "Why did you call it INDIGO?"

Brown replies, "Because we don't waste our budget on project names like NASA."

Brown walks to the door. Two guards walk in the room, armed with guns that they aim at the people seated at the table, including the President.

Brown pushes the remote once more and a noise like a jet engine starting off begins to come out of the ceiling. Brown leaves the room. The door closes and a big SNAP goes off inside the room knocking everybody out, including the armed guards.

August 2009 - Sugar Grove, WV - Advanced Communication Center, "The Hive"

The elevator door opens, and Professor Paul Brown, in civilian clothes, begins to walk down the corridor. The ground is covered with a sort of gray rubber which makes funky noises when people step on it.

He reaches a security door. Thumbprint are retina check are a match, and Brown goes through.

He enters the "control room" which looks like the typical monitoring station: Two men and a woman sit in front of computers monitoring data while a projector screen on the wall in front of the displays a map of the US with several hundreds of red dots scattered all around.

Nobody seems to have noticed Brown entering the room. Brown stands behind the operators looking at the screen, "Number 1. Turn Beta on."

The woman starts typing on her keyboard without a word. The wall display changes and the outline of the US switches from grey to green. The woman immediately adds, "Beta transmitter operative, 1"

Brown continues with instructions, "Number 1. Turn RFID on."
The woman types to more and the red dots on the map turn green, "RFID on, 1"

Brown goes on, "Number 1. Turn datalink on and set operative software on a host in New York City."
The woman types and the wall display zoom in on NYC. She adds, "Datalink connection established. Uploading remote software to user 1287. Upload complete. Remote control online, 1."

Brown's enthusiasm builds as a green dot in the center of the wall display turns yellow and blinks. He shouts, "we are in business people!"

The operators don't answer, and Brown continues, "Number 1. Turn Number 2 on."

The woman types and the chair of the man next to her props back. The man stays still. Two electrodes on the headrest lock the man's head in position. The woman adds, "Number two online. Operational data transferred. Mission Active Thunder engaged, 1."

Brown moves close to the woman a looks at her screen. He grabs a pen on the table and writes on a sticky note. The note reads "JACK LEBLANC". Brown sticks the note on the forehead of the man. "Sweet dreams Mr Leblanc," he adds before leaving the room.

As Brown is about to cross the doorway, he turns around and looks at the woman. "Number 1, do you want to have a drink? You should relax you never take any time off."

The woman freezes. Her hands are blocked over the keyboard. Suddenly, her head tilts down and up again. After a couple of seconds she says, "Invalid syntax entry. Please refer to data code manual. Operating system restore complete, 1."

"Almost human," says Brown as he leaves the room.

Excellent writing and good story. I too believe scenarios such as this play out in real life, people behind glass studying some poor guy stuck on the other side. It's spooky as all get out.

Hope you do well in the contest,

wupy

A series of two disturbing snapshots... the machinations of a secret government and the people running it. Project Indigo may easily be a 'Black Op' running behind closed doors and out of the public view. The writing style and story structure (in two parts) suits the characters of the narrative well.

Our leaders are lustful over the powers of the real controllers, they are the biggest conformers of them all.
