Iran: "God has liberated SMS" but targets satellite dishes

tehranbureau.com

[TEHRAN BUREAU] Government officials are asking residents in north and northwest Tehran to choose: either keep their much prized — but illegal — satellite dishes, or continue chanting, “Allah o Akbar!” or “God is Great,” the revolutionary slogan piercing the capital every night, but not both.

Since the brutal crackdown on protesters after the June 12 presidential election and the information blackout that followed, electronic signals have been in high demand. More than ever, Iranians want their Internet, text messaging, BBC and Voice of America, which come flowing through satell

The Iranian authorities are asking people to make a choice which will bite the authorities in the rear end no matter which option the people choose. Either way, they still have to contend with either the chants of thousands of disaffected Iranians from the rooftops -- the same "Allah o Akbar" which heralded the toppling of the regime 30 years ago--or with the people's exposure to western media and its "corrupting" influence.

Heretofore they have tried to suppress both, largely unsuccessfully. Maybe now the government is trying to appease the people somewhat by offering a compromise and not seeming to crack down as hard on protesters. But either way the individuals choose, it will be difficult for the ruling powers.

Hey . . . .the title of this article is odd and awkward -- it wasn't translated into English very well--but that's the title that Tehran Bureau put on it. ATS conventions say I have to use the exact title that is on the article posted.

I think this article is worth reading so I will try to get it up there again.

I'm sure in a day or so somebody will post a story on this subject and get a lot of responses. This happens to me a lot.

I enjoyed the last line of this story. Isn't that the truth.

Seems to me that the government's cutting off access during the protests might have been and might remain the bigger story than the protests themselves. Thinking (hopeing) it at least opened a lot of people's eyes...

It is ironic that a Theocratic regime is attempting to stop people uttering
" Allah o Akbar " .

It was a very intelligent choice of proxy/ protest chant .

A brief excerpt from the CNN story:

At first, members of the movement bragged about being able to skirt the Iranian firewall and share their message -- including pictures and videos that showed the scope of their protests and documented government and pro-government violence that helped galvanize international support for their cause.

Now, some say, the government is catching up.

"It's begun to tail off, but not because people aren't taking the video," Nelson said. "There's just no way to get it out.
