Ideas for a new rifle

Anyways im on the market for a new rifle. I previously owned a new england firearms .308. Was a very nice rifle and had alot of punch which i liked cuz it meant my fat arse didnt have to track em very far. Anyways luck wasnt on my side one day and my brother knocked over our gun cabinet and busted something inside my gun. the point is im short a rifle so i was wondering if any of my fellow ats'ers had any suggestions for a rifle to take down them big georgia deer? oh im looking for a .270 because its a nice flat shooting round with good knockdown but i am open to other calibers

I was thinking of maybe a weatherby mark 5 chambered in .270 or maybe going custom with like a kreiger barrel, a nesika action, maybe situate all that on a m700 style stock, with a leupold or cheap swarovski scope maybe even a burris and in a .243 or .270

Any suggestions or custom setups?

A .270 is nice, but depending on what you want it for. If it is for a Sit X type event, exotic ammo will be alot harder to find. A .308, as you probably know, is also a military round and could be found easier than a .270. Although if it is just for hunting and such, go for it. Just for fun I owned a 300 Magnum once. My God what a rifle, but almost too rediculous.

My opinion, .308 cal in .308 win or 30-06 spr. A heavy (bull) barreled rifle, Remington 700 VSS,PSS or similar, or Savage 110 series. Spend the same or more on optics, Leupold has never done me wrong, & have made a little money on one upon resale. Get the Leupold dual dovetail mounts and leupold rings. Have a pro do the mount and set you up with the perfect rounds to shoot. I prefer .308 cal 165 gr Nosler partition, knock down anything on this continent with proper placement. 180 gr is good in '06 but more recoil.

I've shot 350 lbs wild boar, broke both shoulders and neck, w/ exit wound, using 165 gr. .308 Win out of a Rem. PSS 700. Approx 2750 fps.

yeah i fell in love with my .308 especially after seeing it blow a fist sized hole in a deer's ribcage and they generally don't run too far but i figured a .270 would have less drop and have enough power and figured i could use it for hogs in the groves down here in florida. Any thoughts on maybe getting a 30/30? im just concerned it doesnt have the range but it'd make an excellent bush gun. Any particular model leupold scope you'd recommend? Have you ever heard of a .264 win mag? Any thoughts on it?

My four suggestions:

1. Mauser 98K 8mm
You can still find them for around $250

2. 1903 Springfield 30.06
You can find these in sporter configurations for around $500

3. Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R
Found for around $130

4. SMLE .303 British (7.7x54 mm)
Found for around $400

All of the above: 8mm (7.92x57mm), 30.06 (7.62x63), 7.62.54R, and .303 (7.7x54) are all in a similar bullet class, great hunting rounds which pack a mean punch. All calibers are easy to acquire as well.

All the above rifles are tried and true military bolt action firearms known for their reliability and accuracy.

If money is of no concern for you then I would recommend
5. Springfield Armory SOCOM .308 (7.62x51)
For around $3000 you can have tactical bliss with a nice gas operated, box magazine fed, lead delivery system with Leatherwood optics.

I almost forgot. If you are into cool and strange rifles, look for:
6. Hakim 8mm
Gas operated, 10 round box magazine fed Egyptian muzzle braked war hammer. A loud and heavy beasty based upon the Ljungman G-42. You won't mind the weight of it when you fire it as there is very little felt recoil. You can find these for under $500. They are great fun to shoot and turns heads at the shooting range when the muzzle unleashes ear splitting hellfire. The only bad part of the rifle is that is deforms the brass on the way out so reloading is not an option on spent brass.

i like the sound and look at the remington 700 pss .308 however i do love a bull barrel like mentioned above and I'd prefer to stick with bolt actions because i believe for hunting rifles there is a limit to the clip size though im not for sure

I went backwards and love it...
I recently picked up a matching pair 45 long colt lever action rifle and revolver.....
I'm amazed with the accuracy, I understand its not like my .222
I can't put 5 shots in .75" @ 200 yds
but 3 inch groups @ 100 yards with 250 grain lead around 1000 FPS
I started playing with this Cal. because it can "in sit X" be loaded with black powder, and brass is easy to come by, it can also be used to fire .45 ACP rounds with the half moon clips...and .410 shotgun shells trimed to length to fit the chamber 2 1/8 inchs
I won't rant on and on, I am a target shooter @ heart with the more exotic cals.
But the versatility of the 45 LC is just WOW

Browning BBR .270-win bolt-action rifle. Synth or treated wood stock. East to maintain, and RELIABLE. 4+1 capacity. Bolt and firing pin are very simple and reinforced. Trigger assembly is safely nested in a wood stock internally lined with softwood inlay for shock protection. Sythetic version is not lined but it doesn't need to be. Long story short this is my favorite and by experience the best .270 hunting rifle on the market.

Mmmm. I like military style firearms. If I were you I would get myself a Hekler and Noch NATO sniper rifle. This is used by the Deutchland Counter Terrorism Team.

You can never go wrong with a rem. M700 or browny A-bolt..Now they have an X-bolt..

I have both,the rem is a old M700 BDL in .243 and the Browny is a .300Win Mag..Both very acurate,with the rem a touch tighter at 100 yards..

If you can find one one better is a pre 1964 winchester model 70..I have one also in .300 win mag..

Both belted mags took down Kudu in Africa and too many deer in the states..I'm a firm believer in having the ability NOT to dought the punch of a shot on the outer limits of 250-300 yards if need be..

Basicly better to have it and not need it,but have it when you do..

Though rounds are a bit more spendy,but I'll pay the extra knowing what ever i hit is going to tumble...

I would look at nothing other than a .308,30-06 or a belted mag thats availible in your area..If your gonna buy one rifle might as well buy one that is multi purpose..From hunting whatever in the states to a defensive rifle in a Sit-X type of situation..

The .270 is one flat-shooting, hard-hitting deer round, and after all, the OP indicated it was for deer hunting.

I have a Browning BBR, and the quality is just excellent! The accuracy is unbelievable, and if you also start to reload, you save money on ammo, you have better, more accurate ammo, and you can literally drive nails. My favorite is to reload using the Nosler ballistic tip.

Consider the Browning. A bit more expensive than the Remington, but what you get is worth more than the difference.

And by the way, your wallet not-withstanding, nothing wrong with that Remington either.

A necked down 300 win mag... Thats a screamer! I bet it'll get a vapor trail under good conditions!

Sounds like a really good praire dog popper. Just one problem...

How good are you at installing (or making) your own barrels? This sucker eats barrels! Its good for about 500 rounds before accuracy goes to hell.
Kinda like a 22-250.

If its a used rifle, be careful unless you know the owner and the rifle. Burned out barrel is a good time to sell one...if unscrupulous.

I agree with some of the others here. 308 win is an excellent choice. I suggest HIGHLY that you reload for it. Want a high velocity low recoil?
Sierra 125gr flat nose hollow point (looks like a 357 mag bullet) or the 130hp spire. These are both capable of 3000fps+ velocity.

I have easily clover leafed these babies at 100 and 200 yrds. If I were a better shot and had better fields, no telling what they would do.

Do whatcha want. Its your choice. For variety of weights and velocity make mine a 308 brother!

If you do go with the 264, I would try and get it in a savage 110 variant. The barrels can be swapped by anyone. Just get the little wrench and go with it. The accu-trigger is a dream

Aug design in .308 or 30/06 caliber, plus an accessory rail on top and under front barrel.

30/06 hands down. very popular and harder hitting than 308(altho i love my 308 and is my 2nd choice)
nothing wrong with a 270 but it is no more "flat shooting" than an 06- after all it is a30/06 cartridge necked down to 270- and in alot of loads and grains the 30/06 actually outperforms the 270.
also the 270 only comes in 4 different grain bullets that i know of.
you are actually better off with a 280 instead of a 270 if you reload since this is a 30/06 cartridge also but necked down to 7mm and MANY different grain bullets are available.
for sit x stick with 30/06 or 308 since they will be readily (hopefully)available
for extreme knock down, "flat shooting" cartridges 300 magnums(rem,win, weatherby) are hard to beat unless you feel like getting a .50 BMG

I have a Browning A-bolt in .30-06
It is an awsome rifle and i would recomend it to anyone. Both enough power and flat shooting.
If your out for a really flat shooting and good punch i would probably recomend 7mm rem-mag or 300 Win-Mag over a 270 win.

If you want extreme knock down and decent trajectory: 338 win mag

If you want the extremes of both, without beeing 50 bmg or 460 wetherby or something in that expensive/insane class i would reccomend 338 Ultra Mag.

Anyway, if it where up to me it would be a A-bolt anytime. Actually thinking about getting me another one in a diffrent caliber. (probably 338 winmag)

How about a Mosin Nagant like a Finnish M28? Mosins can be had for like $99 and ammo is cheap too

I would think 7.62x54R would work well for deer considering Simo Hahya used one in WWII to rack up 500+ kills

I'd probably just get a 308 because there are tons of ammo choices, it's more readily available and less expensive than say a more rare hunting cartridge, but maybe that's not a big concern if it will only be used for hunting. A Remington 700 variant seems like something you can't go wrong with

i hunt with a remington 700 in 30/06
it is sighted in to hit 3" high at 100 yards
i hold dead on up to 350 yards and am always in the kill zone.
i reload and use nosler balistic tip bullets 150 grain boat tails and can shoot a 2" group of 5 at 250 yards- believe me deer don't like them
338 is a great cartridge(altho the most violent recoil i have ever come across) but a bit over kill for deer on the east coast of the us. hell 30/06 is.
when i lived in alaska 338 was the popular cartridge for bear defense- favorite among guides.
you can never go wrong with a browning or weatherby rifle if you can afford them- tikka and sako also make great rifles
and to edit my last post- 270 you can get 8 different grain bullets but i said 4 because only 4 are suitable for big game- altho there is a 150 grain alloy bullet(if you can find them)so that will make 5
biggest thing in selecting a gun is to be comfortable with it-if you aren't confident you will hit what you aim at or are scared of it it becomes a baseball bat. choose wisely

338 win mag - 375 HH pressed down to 338 and made a little shorter
338 Ultra mag - Developed by Remington and packs more punch/speed than win mag
338 LAPUA - developed by lapua for the military market as an long range anti material/personel sniper round. Packs insane punch and speed. Heard of people shooting antilopes at 1200m+. Expensive as hell

7,62*54R the R stands for rimmed, in other words for singleshot weapons and Drilling/combi shotguns.

If i where u i would not go for an 308. It is a great round but if you want .30cal it is way better with a .30-06 springfield.

You know what they say, the 06 springfield is the Coka Cola of cartridges.

i agree- 30/06 is the best round ever concieved
it can bring down any animal on the planet depending on the load and grain you use.
it can be loaded light for varmint or heavy for big big game plus as i said before it is very popular so will never be a shortage of ammo and if shtf having these rounds will be a great bargaining chip

Get a Chaytek M200 Intervention with their custom .408 round. Or maybe a Barrett M82A1 .50BMG. Oh, wait, we can't just buy those at Wal-Mart, can we... damn!
