Court OKs dumping gold mine waste in lake

WASHINGTON (AP) — A mining company was given the go-ahead by the Supreme Court on Monday to dump waste from an Alaskan gold mine into a nearby 23-acre lake, although the material will kill all of the lake's fish.

The court said that the federal government acted legally in declaring the waste left after metals are extracted from the ore as "fill material" allowing a federal permit without meeting more stringent requirements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Water Act.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin called the decision "great news for Alaska" and said it "is a

I think this ruling just sets a bad precedent. Now companies got the green light to dump toxic waste on lakes? What's next? Ans Sarah Palin!! Please! She says that is great news for Alaska the dumping of toxic waste in the name of creating 375 jobs?!

Thats coming from a potential presidential candidate in 2012. I can wait to see her as President then.

I'm a lot more concerned about this sort of pollution than global warming. CO2 I don't find to be a big deal, its not toxic, yet real pollution problems seem to get much less attention. Sort of a stupid comment by Palin, you'd think she'd try to be a little less thrilled considering the death of all the fish.

Sarah Palin is an evil woman.

I think she actually LIKES to destroy the environment.

Thank you for posting this.

How can destroying a lake be okay?

Why would anyone be happy with this? Couldn't the waste/fill be put somewhere else?

Sorry, this just shocks me. Maybe it shouldn't, I don't know.

Makes me upset.

WOW!!!!!!!!!! This is terrible news. Setting a court decision like this as a precedent for all others to follow everywhere.

I feel thought that mother nature will have revenge for these acts. The more these kinds of acts happen, the more it spills into the rest of the environment, food sources, strange weather patterns, its all connected you know.

Palin is evol.

They also are allowed to dump waste material into creeks during the mining practice called "Mountaintop Removal" in the quest for coal!
