Think-tank recommends EI system changes

www.edmontonjournal.com

OTTAWA — As political leaders in Ottawa push the country to the brink of an election over eligibility requirements for employment insurance, a prominent think-tank says two critical issues are being missed — putting the program on a more stable footing financially and insulating it from political interference.

This has been a major issue in Canada for over a year now and the opposing political parties have been fighting for changes. Prime minister Stephen Harper has done nothing to make the situation better instead it gets worse day by day. Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has been wanting an election ever since the issue was brought up in the house of commons.

What a scam....

In order to get increased EI benefits we would have to vote in a bunch of guys who will to give 500 times as much money to "bail-out" failed businesses and institutions.

The government should not be interfering with the markets the way that they are. It is fascism.

I am glad that Harper is holding back. Prime Minister Harper's restraint has saved my unborn grandchildren from being born tens of thousands of dollars in debt...

EI has become a joke in Canada!

I live in a northern region and a lot of people rely on EI to get through the winter months. This year the system has broken down. Everyone is still waiting for benefits and many people, for the first time ever, don't even qualify for benefits.

Personally, my claim has been denied, the first time that has ever happened to me. I paid into EI all the time I was working but now I can't collect.

I'm not mad... but I refuse to keep paying into a system that doesn't work. I'll incorporate myself and not pay into these defunct social programs any more. "F" "U" Harper! Take your EI revenues and stick em into general revenues... I'm gonna be one of those corporations you so love to toss money at.
