H1N1 More Lethal for Some Ethnic Groups

Well this could explain why Mexico had so many deaths, yet the Swine Flu has NOT had the same lethal impact in the U.S. (in fact most that were hospitalized or died in the U.S. were from Mexican decent).

Now its hitting the Indigenous Canadians hard. Apparently this has happened before and they are particularly suspectable to flu strains.

Hopefully this news will calm down those that are getting paranoid in the states and in Europe a bit. Of course if you have a lot of Indian blood you should probably be extra careful.

And no I am not in any way trying to imply this was generated in a lab, there is a history of this happening before and apparently it is happening again. It also targets younger people more often which also implies some level of immunity among parts of the population.

The World Health Organisation on Tuesday warned that swine flu was causing unusually serious levels of infection among indigenous people in Canada, as it geared up to formally announce a global pandemic.

Keiji Fukuda, the agency's assistant director-general, said a "larger number than expected" of young indigenous people was being hospitalised, in a trend that raised the prospect that the virus may have a more severe impact on some groups of people, similar to the experience in Mexico.

The authorities in Manitoba in Canada confirmed they had brought in extra ventilators and specialists to study the disease as they confirmed a "surge" in people requiring intensive care. They confirmed more than 40 H1N1 cases to date, the majority among those of aboriginal descent. The trend could indicate a genetic susceptibility of indigenous people, who have been badly affected by past flu pandemics, as well as their relative economic and social deprivation.

I am surprised with so many posters on ATS worried about the swine flu not ONE person has commented on this story, as it seems like it would be of interest to ANYONE that is following the swine flu situation.

Did I post this at the wrong time and it just got buried?

That would explain why there is a lot of people in mexico getting swine flu as many of them are indigonous. Feel sorry for them flu sucks I haven't had a good bout of flu in years. The only good thing about flu is it helps to shed a few pounds.

I've actually posted on a lot of threads about this topic. I've wondered about genetic diversity, founder's effect, etc. As we saw in 1918, many Native North Americans saw as high as a 90% rate of mortality from flu. It seems that people who are 'mutts", like me, or many others, take ill, but recover.

It's been true for millenia-The Justinian plague; the Black Death took most of China, most of the middle east, destroyed Sicily, Rome, Sienna, Florence, but not other areas of Italy near Switzerland (well- only 20%, rather than 35-50%).

England, France, Spain, Germany, wiped out- Russia escaped with only about a 15% mortality, as it is (was) comprised of Norse, Asian, Native Siberian, Mongolian, people, etc.

We need to be aware of this- and pharmas do, as well- genotyping might be a key to stopping a mass extincition event.

In the meantime, pray for the Canadian and American Nations and others who are being hit so terribly hard- pray for all.

Yeah in the meantime it will remain a secret. The TRUE conspiracy.

Some genotypes are much more likely to die from this. They should be careful. But we can't say that huh? Can't warn those most at risk? Yes that is the true conspiracy!!!

Its colder up there, which means flu can spread much easier. I doubt this is due to genetics. The people in Mexico died because h3n2 and h2n3 was released at the same time as h1n1.
