As millions of workers take to the streets world-wide to
celebrate May Day as a day of international working class solidarity,
we need to reassess our common objectives in the light of a
growing world crisis of capitalism.
Following a 25,000 May 1st rally in Chicago in 1886,
the bosses were determined to crush the militant labor movement.
Police shot and killed four workers on a picket line two days later.
However, a bomb thrown by an agent provocateur killed seven
police, who responded by shooting several workers and injuring
hundreds more. In the following weeks, the police carried out
systematic raids on strikers and trade unionists, breaking up meetings
with violence. Workers� leaders were framed and sentenced
to death, but was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Starting with the Chicago tragedy, which became known
thereafter as international workers day, workers representatives
set up the Second International in 1889, under the banner of workers�
internationalism. A key resolution of the Congress was that
on every May Day workers in every country would strike and
demonstrate for the 8-hour day. For over 100 years, tens of millions
have expressed their determination again and again to rid the
world of oppression, war and poverty. The victory of the Russian
working class in October 1917 marked an enormous advance in
the struggle for the socialist transformation of society. It represented
a beacon to the workers� movement internationally.

London on May Day in the past five years has seen fierce anti-capitalism protests, often accompanied by clashes with the police and scores of arrests.

But this year one of the main groups which co-ordinated the protests says that the only event it will be organising is a picnic - and blames a growing apathy among its members for this move.

During the height of the Cold War they used to show the military parades of the Communist countries. It was great, if you liked watching tanks. (I didn't. Found it kind of a testosterone braggadocio.)

You are talking about the Chicago Haymarket Affair. May first also sets stage for the traditional May Day spring festival celebrated across most of Europe and also signifies the founding day for the Illuminati.

I'm relieved that I'm in the US right now. I get to miss the 'May Day' bank holiday. I fecking hate bank holidays almost as much as sundays. I would always volunteer to work bank holidays because I'd get a day off later (when I wanted it) and wouldn't be subjected to twelve mile tailbacks on the M6.

I really don't understand why so many people rush off to some seaside town or Alton Towers etc on a fecking bank holiday when everyone else has the same idea.

may day is something of an illuminati celebration, I believe. i forgot how or why and frankly i dont feel like looking it up right now. dont believe me? i dont care.

on the other hand, there are other countries which regard may 1 to be like a labor day; the celebration of hard working people.

people don't like capitalism because of its greedy overtones. its based on materialism and the constant acquisition of wealth which in itself can be self-defeating at times
