China bars foreign reporters from Tiananmen Square

BEIJING (AP) -- Foreign journalists were barred from Beijing's Tiananmen Square on Wednesday as police fanned out across the vast plaza on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the bloody crackdown on 1989 pro-democracy protests.

Authorities blocked social networking and image-sharing Web sites such as Twitter and Flickr and confined dissidents to their homes or forced them to leave Beijing, as they ramped up efforts to prevent online discussions about or commemorations of those who died in the military assault on demonstrators on the night of June 3-4 1989.

This is a real shame. They should allow their people the right to express themselves. I know they won't and this doesn't surprise me but they should.

They've also taken away access to twitter and Flickr which is going to make getting info out a little more difficult. However, I'm sure that people will find a way.

What happened in Tiananmen Square was an absolute disgrace and the way the Chinese Government are trying to hush it up by not allowing reporting about it or social networking to be used at this time is a disgrace of the highest order.

This is a real life cover up that is going on now - and they're being allowed to get away with it.

Do they not realise the amount of negative press this is going to cause them when they could be building relationships around the world based on the North Korea crisis?

That's what dictators do. Absolute control over anything political, social or economic. Yes people died but those people we enemies of the state. I know you're not surprised but why would you think that there would be any chance at all that the PRC would allow the memorializing of enemies?
