Qld Australia Snap quarantine??

lol, i'm not scared of the flu, i'm just going to be pissed off it euins the origin, or disrupts my daily life.

There is nothing wrong with being cautious...seriously. The Spanish flu of 1918 killed 30 million worldwide and that was without air and mass road travel etc. The killer flu mutated in the 3rd wave. Yes we have better healthcare, vaccines etc, but that won't matter in a pandemic. What we DO have now that will help are preventative measures.

Nothing 'globally devasting to populations' as such has happened on earth since WW2. I'm not saying it WILL happen but people who have only lived since the 60s can be very naive. I have studied WW2 history and most people today have no inkling about death and destruction on daily basis...I hope we never do, but it makes people very naive and closed.

All it takes is one mutation of a flu to turn it into from a regular flu to a killer flu. Half the reason SARS wasn't a huge deal in the end was because it was contained. The WHO did their job! People need to stop acting like they know everything. The general public are NOT doctors or health officials. Even if nothing comes of this, there is nothing wrong with taking preventative measures. I hate seeing mothers, who supposedly CARE about their kids saying, "too bad, we aren't keeping him home" etc. Selfish.

This is completely ridiculous!

Cruise Ship Pacific Dawn Quarantined

First they try to quarantine the ship that displayed the first cases of the Swine Flu and then the "public outcry" was so overwhelming, they released the passengers. This is a classic example of stupidity in it's highest form.

Either you have your 'freedom' and then infect the rest of the population (case in point) or you accept that you could possibly endanger the public and go through your quarantine with grace. Accept the things you cannot change, not stir up the media that you are being held hostage and aganist your will on your cruise?!!

I'm sure the virus will mutate- and it's a scary thought. I just wanted you to know that those of us here are not blind to what's happening there, and wish you safety. I hope you didn't misunderstand my post, or think I was being glib. On the contrary-

lol i'm sure we all understood. I've taken a few measures, like using anti bacterial hand stuff at work, and so is my partner. it was seriously stupid to let the people off the boat without proper testing, that;s what has cause this huge burst of cases in aus. I just hope there are no deaths, cause if there are we will really see fear in aus.

Swinggal- I agree with you completely. I'd rather be overly cautious and survive than remain laissez-faire and in denial- and wind up dead.

There must be a middle way between fear and paranoia and simple common sense. There IS a circulating de novo strain of flu- out of season- and it IS killing people and being spread rapidly. We should pay attention and protect ourselves. We don't need to become hysterical and run in the streets! If it were baby formula poisoning or Chernobyl fallout, we' take care- why not take care from an infection? It doens't mean the world's ending- but what if we could stop people from ending? Wouldn't we want to make the effort?

I was just thinking about Cherry's post- that there are huge numbers of infected people, but no deaths, as opposed to the US where we have soaring infection rates AND deaths. Is there something to be learned here?

Most Americans have no CLUE what is happening- not in the news (except when it's someone known- like Obama's aide in France, or Mayor Nagin quarantined in Shanghai (which makes me laugh in a twisted way- he's probably safer there than in New Orleans, where he and the Feds let people drown from Katrina). The only way I'm finding out about my own country is through the AP, Reuters, BBC, etc. I'm also looking up local news affiliates who are reporting deaths and illnesses that don't make the news. Maybe that's the difference- your gov. in Aus is actually TALKING to you- ours is pretending nothing's happening, yet asking for $2B for vaccine production. Isn't that a bit paradoxical?

In musing I bet that's the reason you all in Aus are staying alive- (insert ill-timed Bee-Gees joke here)you're not being lied to, and we are, and thus, dying.
There have been NO announcements to stay away from crowds, etc.., here. Parents are actually angry that their kids' schools are closed. What the he** is wrong with my country? Is there room for two there- young, healthy, progressive, educated types?????

Heya guys: Hope everyone is feeling well, i'm feeling a little feverish, but i don't think it's anything serious, guess i'll find out when i wake up tomorrow. Here is a new story I found today :

AN ambulance patient infected with swine flu by a paramedic is Tasmania's 10th case of the virus.
Director of Public Health Chrissie Pickin said the patient, from the state's northwest, was infected by the paramedic before it became obvious that the officer was ill.

"Unfortunately, we believe transmission of the virus would have occurred before we became aware of the paramedic's situation," she said.

Authorities have so far linked swine flu infections in three ambulance patients to the sick paramedic, who contracted the virus during a trip to Melbourne.

The sick officer has also passed the virus to his paramedic partner.

Despite the infections, Dr Pickin said Tasmanians should not be deterred from calling an ambulance in an emergency.

One of the reason's i personally believe that we will not see death in australia is because we have universal health care. On another note it's been absolutely freezing here the last couple of days!! Probably not to those of you who live where it snows, but I'm used to winter in the 16 - 24 degree range!!

Exactly. We just need to listen and be vigilant. I don't know why people are being so blase. And like someone else said, if you have the swing-flu, you go into quarantine with grace and the hope that you are helping to stop the spread of the flu.

People need to stop thinking of themselves only. We have all lost the community spirit we used to have in this country. Very sad

THE World Health Organisation says the rise in cases in Victoria has moved the world "very very close" to a pandemic.

Do we have any actual statistics on people dying from this flu? I mean honestly, we have identified this particular strain of flu in these cases, but what is the actual threat of death - more to the point, what is the comparative risks for This flu as opposed to your ordinary garden variety?

according to an expert on the TV testerday, he said that we shouldn't be complacent because this virus has a record of killing 1 in 200 people, so get ready for around 5 deaths really quickly before they recover here in Australia.

AUSTRALIA has swung into a new pandemic "protect" phase, as the number of swine flu cases soars past 2000.
The new phase will focus antiviral drugs and medical attention on those deemed most at risk, including pregnant women, the morbidly obese and those with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

People who live with or have come into contact with swine flu patients will no longer be quarantined.

Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon said the states and territories would reopen schools closed due to swine flu and students who had returned from areas affected by the disease would be allowed to attend classes.

This doesn't make sense.
While there were only a few cases they went into overdrive closing schools, quaranting etc and now that it's more prevalent they now go to being non chalant about it??
If Swine Flu is in my area, I want to know.
Now it looks like they won't be reporting cases, so we won't know if it's in our suburbs or not.

This is totally bananas.
