Powerful earthquake detected off coast of Honduras

(CNN) — A powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1, was reported off the coast of Honduras early Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The National Weather Service placed the central American country under a tsunami watch. The watch was also in effect for Belize and Guatemala.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The earthquake was recorded about 27 miles (43 km) from Roatan. Initially, the Geological Survey issued a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 for the quake.

Tsunami warning has been issued, but I wonder what type a wave this type of earthquake would cause. I'm sure someone on here knows, anyone?

Regardless, I really hope one doesn't hit, as we all know from the 2004 tsunami that they can pack quite the devastating punch. Doesn't help though when you live on Vancouver Island and you're sketchy about earthquake/tsunami news in general...such as myself. Peace.

The quake was two hours ago so any tsunami would already have reached land by now in that area.

No idea what type of quake it was on what type of fault, so without that info it is near impossible to give an idea on the formation of a tsunami.
