Astronauts Spot Mysterious Ice Circles in World’s Deepest Lake

ISS astronauts spotted two very large dark circles on the Baikal lake.

Although Wired seems to have a "natural" explanation, I can't help but think that it is a pretty weird phenomenon.
Maybe a giant gas bubble coming from deep under?

What do you guys think?

Those are perfect circles so I think we can be skeptical of natural explanations...

I can't think of any...

Lots of circles in nature. planets, bubbles, craters. heck your eyeballs have circles called iris's as well as pupils.

That being said I have no idea what is causing the two circles in the pictures. they do seem to be coming up from underneath such as warm springs heating the ice or some other annomoly.

I don't know what i was thinking.

It makes me think there may be a heat source deep below. Just a thought. Cool pics though. Edit to add...Duh... Note to self: Read article first.

I find the explanation in the article totally plausible. And to call these "perfect circles" is far from true.

You wanna see a natural perfect circle, some bee just did some free woodworking on my brand new back deck. The fat little bugger managed to drill a perfect circle in my wood. I saw a bunch of wood shavings on my porch table and had trouble finding where they came from when looking up. I overlooked the bee excavation because it looked like a drilled bolt hole at first. Perfect circle, I swear. I bow to my future bee overlords......

Looks to me that something heavy had landed, cracked the ice sheat, taken off and left its heat mark. Can't say about the other, would be the same thing me thinks.

I wonder if they are the same diameter...
that would be very intriguing if the were.

Yeah that's what I thought when seeing them, haha. I can easily go for gas pockets heating it up from below, but the odds of them being about the same size would seem more far fetched.

Pretty sure it's the same phenomena that produces ice circles, probably a under water current in the area.

what do u think this is on this lake..?

i belive its 1.5 km width and 100km long. it can not be a distorted image because its gone under water very clearly and into earth.?
