Jordan announced today that they will allow US troops to be based in-country to man Patriot Missile Air Defenses for Amman, the launch of
search-and-rescue missions from its airfields, a military hospital and search-and-rescue missions in eastern Jordan, near the country's 100-mile
border with Iraq and the overflight of allied planes across its airspace (for example, from carriers in the Mediterranean,) in any war with
neighboring Iraq.
"The diplomats, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the U.S. troop presence initially would be limited to search and rescue operations but
could expand in the course of any war to include attack forces against Western Iraq from along the Jordanian border."
