In a lengthy article on Donald Rumsfeld’s rocky tenure as Defense Secretary, GQ published never-before-seen cover sheets from top-secret intelligence briefings produced by Rumsfeld’s Pentagon. Starting in the days surrounding the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the cover sheets featured inspirational Bible verses printed over military images, “and were delivered by Rumsfeld himself to the White House” to the president, “who referred to America’s war on terror as a ‘crusade,’” GQ writes. Fascinating. Bush was criticized for saying the word "crusade" so he didn't use it anymore.

Why did we really go to war with Iraq? Did the JCS think they were on a mission from God? Just think what these briefings would look like if Palin was in the administration.

I'm surprised they left this one out: "You have heard as it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

Yeah, and how about the one plastered in front of the UN no one listens to either, you know....beat your swords into plowshares ...and not learn war anymore.

And people wonder why these books have so little value the way they pervert and use the words like pawns in a stinking game. Nothing the government does nor the lengths they will go to in appearing righteous surprises me anymore. But it does make me so angry I only wish I was 30 years younger and a whole lot healthier.

I do think we need a revolution of reason here in this nation. WE are so lost in stupidity and outright manipulation by all of our leaders, social, spiritual, business, educational, and political that someone has to do something.

It's all about manipulation.

Politicians quote the Bible when they think it will get people to go along with their plans. They go to church to woo the masses and play lip-service to Christian morals to appear respectable. They even go as far as asking well-known Christian leaders (not always an accurate description) for their angle on policy issues, knowing that the sycophantic implied flattery will lead to convenient back-scratching from the pulpit come election time.

Just as bad are those who are so self-deluded they actually think their favored interpretation of prophecy absolves them from personal accountability when it comes to invading foreign territory and unleashing weapons of modern destruction on the population.

They can quote the Bible all they like. Bone fide Christian people are neither taken in nor impressed. As the Master said: "If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit".

And boy do they end up looking foolish...

What makes this more misguided is that these briefings weren't ever intended for public consumption according to their declassification exemptions. These were internal documents that Bush and his administration apparently used to reinforce and justify the actions they were taking. By shifting their actions to a fulfillment of God's will, they also could shift their guilty conscience if things went wrong and military deaths.

It would be interesting to see the rest of the presentations to see if there were biblical verses attached to specific strategic goals, as opposed to a title slide.

Having "In God We Trust" on our money is one thing; justifying and even documenting the Iraq war as a mission from God is another.

If these official daily collages of Crusade-like messaging and war imagery had been leaked, they would have reinforced the Muslim world’s apocalyptic fear that America was waging a religious war. As one alarmed Pentagon hand told Draper, the fallout “would be as bad as Abu Ghraib.”

Church and State are still seperate. Presidents and Military men have always taken comfort from religion. They have all prayed for guidance and used Religious terms in thier speeches. This is nothing new.

I don't see the big deal.
