What's more likely is a process I like to call 'Parallel Reality Time Manipulation.' It's a method I describe in my short story
These Dark Worlds where a group of individuals known as the
Timewave
Technicians emerge from a world struck by a negative technological singularity and attempt to alter the past by merging parallel realities and
splicing portions of varying 'timewaves.'
Anyway, I don't feel that time travel along one single timeline is possible. Our consciousness is firmly embedded in the Now, and in order to
experience other 'times' we need to dislodge our consciousness and shift gears so to speak to a parallel (and very similar) timeline. According to
quantum mechanics, there can be many versions of you in many realities. If so, then this natural phenomenon could be manipulated to one's advantage
given the specific technological know-how.
This said, I think something like 'soul retrieval' could happen via this process, and it could happen seemingly instantaneously rather than having
to wait for one's own timeline to reach it's end. I also beleive that parallel timelines are not completely independant and solid, but fluid,
merging, and interwoven. If that's the case then you are constantly shifting your consciousness ever so slightly with other versions of you without
your ever noticing.
