12-year-old steals day with pro-life speech

I thought I'd share this, I didn't find it on ATS yet I give the girl a lot of credit.

Despite facing threats of disqualification, a 12-year-old girl took first place in a speech contest when she eloquently argued for the rights of unborn children – after an offended judge quit.

"What if I told you that right now, someone was choosing if you were going to live or die?" the seventh-grader begins in a video recording of her speech on YouTube. "What if I told you that this choice wasn't based on what you could or couldn't do, what you'd done in the past or what you would do in the future? And what if I told you, you could do nothing about it?"

The girl, a student at a Toronto school identified only as "Lia," continued:

"Fellow students and teachers, thousands of children are right now in that very situation. Someone is choosing without even knowing them whether they are going to live or die.

"That someone is their mother. And that choice is abortion."

Obviously the parents views pushed upon the child.

I do agree and am pro-life, but this is propaganda in school, this has no class.

Obviously? Isn't it a parents job to raise their children to know right from wrong? Or is that now reserved for the government or the school system?

I really feel sorry for this young girl. I have no problem with her stand on the topic of abortion, but to be honest I think her mother wrote the speech and just gave it to her to practice over and over. Why would the teacher allow the girl to continue even though she was informed she would be disqualified? No twelve year old I ever met sits down and thinks about the implications of abortion.

This is a crazy and upsetting story. Her parents deserve two thumbs down for brainwashing and not allowing their daughter to form her own opinion. This kind of stuff makes me a little mad and reminds of those parents that force their young children into beauty pageants and such.

I do not think that, at age 12, a student can properly understand the reasons that people choose abortion, and the arguments for the pro-life movement.

I do not think that any 12 year old should be involved in issues such as these without in-depth research. Because I doubt this child's parents explained to her the ramifications, such as an increase in foster care, homeless children, sick/under nourished children, black market abortions, home abortions, the surge of genetic hereditary disorders in children in foster care or orphanages, and on and on...

But maybe that's just me. I also doubt that this child understands that in order for the pro-life movement to take foot, free birth control needs to be provided for every single person, and not just generic birth control, but a method tailored to each and every individual along with regular visits for women to OBGYNs or midwives, free of charge.

But maybe I'm wrong and she does understand all of that before she goes and chooses that stance.

I know this thread is going to quickly turn into an abortion debate I will just say that the child did a brave thing to stand up for what she believes in. Even if it is her parents view at least she is thinking about political/social/religious issues instead of staring all day at a TV and the latest pop star, etc.

As she gets older her views and beliefs may change or stay the same but at least she will have her head out of the sand.

Lia did a great job on this topic! Plus she was citing facts and backing up her point extremely well. I am glad that she didnt back down and followed through with what she believed in. As far as the "judges" who couldnt handle the topic, to hell with them! School is a place to learn new things, not stifle young minds.

No - the foetus is not a child, it is not alive, it a parasitic organism that has no brain function.

Not sure I would place the rights of a parasitic organism with no brain function above the entire physical and psychological well being an sentient human being.

Well over 70% of all foetus abort naturally - is this a crime ? Is nature a criminal ?

the American prolife stance is just another example of how far behind the the rest of the western world they are - backwards.
