U.S. regulatory czar nominee wants Net 'Fairness Doctrine'

www.worldnetdaily.com

Cass Sunstein sees Web as anti-democratic, proposed 24-hour delay on sending e-mail

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama's nominee for "regulatory czar" has advocated a "Fairness Doctrine" for the Internet that would require opposing opinions be linked and also has suggested angry e-mails should be prevented from being sent by technology that would require a 24-hour cooling off period.
.....
Sunstein also has argued in his prolific literary works that the Internet is anti-democratic because of the way users can filter out information of their own choosing

Please explain to me what "in the interest of citizenship" means?

dictionary.com
–noun 1. the state of being vested with the rights, privileges, and duties of a citizen. 2. the character of an individual viewed as a member of society; behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functions of a citizen: an award for good citizenship.
So choosing a source of information without a government approved counter opinion attached is not proper behavior for a dutiful citizen?

So a website like, lets say...ATS would be REQUIRED BY LAW to have list of links in the margins to where one could find the proper opposing viewpoints to any given subject?

There's just no way to enforce this. This is just asinine liberal big talk. Whatever system they tried to set up to enforce these rules would be hacked, cracked and laughed at within an hour of setup. Fairness is overrated.

I hope you are right, because there are a lot of those fools in office now. The sad thing is that they will pass laws right under our noses before we know what is going on.

OMG! Say it aint so Joe.

This is rediculous and just goes to show that we need manditory psych evals for public officials.

They at least need to be multi-qualified in their field. Just being able to turn on a computer and maybe send an email isn't a qualification.

i could see the phone companies taking a big sweep in their stocks by the sheer number of cell and land phone usage spikes from this proposal.

IN THEORY; news should be affiliated with no side. it should be subjective and allow the reader to form his or her own opinion.

Just think of how much LESS work would be done if there was a global 24 hour "cooling" between ALL emails.

Maybe you're on to something there, drsmooth. Maybe the US post office and the telcos are trying to reduce the monopoly email currently has on quick communication. Sounds like they might have traded a few favors with Cass Sunstein to get this BS legislation proposed.

All the "Your mom" jokes would be sent by snail mail, because e-mail would just be too slow for adequate insulting purposes.

lol.

Sometimes I wonder if the bureaucrats in Washington have ever, you know, used the internet... beyond staring at their in-box, and following links of cute animal videos.

... now I know who's keeping tech support in business.

"Click the what now?"
"I didn't tell you to click anything, I want your account information."
"Why would you want that?"
"So I can accurately address your technical issues"
"You sound disrespectful, I work in Washington, Do you know who I am?!"
"No, sir... but I would if you gave me your account information"

Yeah... I worked tech support as a kid... Whenever I learn of bureaucrats saying stupid things about the internet, I just cringe... reminds me too much of the ignorant customers.

Do they honestly think they could control the internet? They can try to censor and control it but there are so many hackers they would be overwhelmed within seconds of setting up any system.

If I were the designer of the internet, I'd file this one under "feature request" rather than "bug fix".
They better not put this idea through because it is completely stupid.

would make emailing a resume rather interesting, wouldn't it???

this is why I think you should hire me....
this is what others say as to why you should hire them....

lol!!!

hey, I'll include your resumes in mine, if you will include mine with yours....

I have an opinion that it's gonna rain today, but, it seems everyone else that I know has the same opinion, and I can't find any oppossing views...
all I want to do is send an email to a friend letting them know that I am canceling the planned cookout because I think it's gonna pour on our parade. hmmm....what to do, what to do....

hmmm.....maybe I send my notification of cancellation to the fruitcakes in washington with a list of email addresses that I want the thing to be forwarded to, they can word the danged thing however they like, as long as a bunch of people don't show up on my front door looking like drowned rats!!!

there has to be a different pandemic out there that is causing mass insanity!!! and it looks like DC has been the hardest hit!!
whatever I send out to my friends via email believe me, isn't of any concern of the government!! and anything I post here, I know they are reading. if they have a opposing view, they are welcome to come on and post it along side mine!!!

It's fairly obvious that this personage hasn't the vaguest notion how the internet works. Opposing viewpoints are a mouseclick away, and who cares if we, as consumers of this product, filter the information. So does she, obviously, or she would actually have some form of knowledge of the internet, aside from the cute animal videos...

I have to agree. It is painfully obvious that whoever wrote the above hasn't got a clue about how internet functions. Not only is it an Utopian idea, it is quite frankly impossible to implement with a satisfactory success rate.

Hell, I'd like to see them try just for the fun of it. I wonder how does one go around programming the conditions required to identify an "angry email."
