Netherlands has 1st H1N1 death

THE HAGUE - THE Netherlands on Tuesday reported its first H1N1 flu death after a 17-year-old boy died overnight, health officials said.

'The boy had been very sick. He died last night,' Harald Wychgel, a spokesman for the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment told AFP.

He would not say whether or not the teenager had died in hospital. -- AFP

2 More H1N1 Deaths Reported In Clark County

LAS VEGAS -- The Southern Nevada Health District has reported two more deaths from the H1N1 virus.

A 37-year-old man with underlying medical conditions died July 29, and a 52-year-old man who also had underlying medical conditions died Aug. 1.

There was also an H1N1-related death on Tuesday, but the district did not provide details on it.

There have been seven deaths and 230 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Clark County, the health district said.

NC fairgoers urged to wash hands to protect pigs

RALEIGH, N.C. — After years of advising fairgoers in North Carolina to wash their hands to protect themselves from animal-borne illnesses, officials have issued an advisory to protect livestock from getting sick.

The state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services on Tuesday issued a warning to 2009 fair patrons to wash their hands to prevent the spread of human-borne illnesses to pigs, specifically the H1N1 virus more commonly known as the swine flu.

Fairgoers are asked to avoid the fair if they are exhibiting any flu-like symptoms, and especially stay away from any animal exhibits. Veterinary officials also recommend that fair managers add a 6-foot barrier around any swine exhibits to further separate humans from animals.

4,889 confirmed cases of AH1N1 flu in Peru, 33 deaths reported

Peru's Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed today the 33rd death due to AH1N1 influenza outbreak, along with 108 new confirmed cases, which add up to 4,889 cases in the country.

The new victims are a 67 year old man from Arequipa, who suffered from hypertension and chronic renal failure; a 54 year old woman from Lima, suffering from morbid obesity, hypothyroidism and congestive heart failure; and a 14 year old patient from Arequipa, too

In the other hand, Minsa also reported that 4,104 cases were discharged, while the patients currently suffering from this influenza are only 785.

Minsa reminds the population that the lab test to confirm the presence of the virus is no a prerrequisite to receive treatment.

Pakistani Embassy staff member dies of H1N1

The Embassy of Pakistan confirmed Tuesday one of its staff members had died of the H1N1 flu virus.

“The health ministry official told our charge d’affaires it was swine flu,” Press and Cultural Attaché Saeed Javed said over the phone.

Tanwer Aktitar Anshari, 50, who worked as an accountant at the embassy, died at MMC hospital Monday morning after being treated as a H1N1 flu suspect. His body has been flown home for burial, Javed said.

“He had been in Indonesia for three years and his term here had ended; he was to leave within a couple of weeks,” Javed said.

He is the first foreigner to fall victim to the deadly virus in Indonesia.

Poll: Israeli Docs Believe H1N1 Vaccine Unnecessary

(IsraelNN.com) A new poll has found that most Israeli doctors believe a new H1N1 vaccine is not necessary – yet.

The survey was conducted by the Medical Media research firm among 145 family physicians. "We are convinced that the opinion of the family physicians is the most significant in determining the allocation of resources for emergency swine flu vaccine," said Yoel Simos, CEO of Medical Media.

The study found that 67 percent of the doctors believe there is no immediate need, if at all, for such a vaccine. Thirty-nine percent of those polled said they believed resources directed toward the H1N1 vaccine should be used for other medical needs.

But 27 percent of family physicians agreed with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who has already ordered enough doses of the vaccine under development to cover every citizen in the state, at a cost of some NIS 450 million. Another 28 percent said the issue is not relevant at present, noting that the vaccine is still under development. They recommended that the decision be put off for at least two months, until further testing can be conducted and the efficacy and risks of the vaccine clarified.

Only 6 percent of the respondents said they felt there was no reason whatsoever to consider purchasing the vaccine.

Brazil: 129 deaths of A/H1N1 flu

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian health authorities Tuesday reported 37 new deaths of A/H1N1 flu in the country, which brought the total death toll to 129.

Among the 37 new deaths, 13 were in the southeastern state of Sao Paulo, three in Rio de Janeiro and 21 in Parana state.

Sao Paulo has the highest death toll so far, with 50 victims, followed by Rio Grande do Sul state with 29 and Parana with 25. Rio de Janeiro lost 19 people to the flu, Santa Catarina, three, and Paraiba, Bahia, and Pernambuco one person each.

Durban man dies of swine flu

A Durban man has died at a local hospital of swine flu, health authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

They say there are 29 confirmed cases of the flu in KwaZulu-Natal.

The 44-year-old Phoenix man, who was not identified, died at Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital last Wednesday, becoming the second person in the country to die of the virus.

The first was Stellenbosch University student Ruan Muller, 22, who died last week on Tuesday.

Iran's Health Ministry denies death report of influenza A/H1N1 infection

TEHRAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Health and Medical Education Ministry on Wednesday denied the report of an influenza A/H1N1 infection death case in the country, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

"The death report of a pregnant woman in Qeshm out of an infection to influenza A/H1N1 virus is not confirmed," Mohammad Mehdi Gouya, an official with the Health Ministry, was quoted as saying.

Earlier on Wednesday, local Mehr news agency reported that a pregnant mother has died in Qeshm, an Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, out of the infection to influenza A/H1N1, quoting an unidentified health expert from the Health Center of southern province Hormozgan

337 confirmed H1N1-related deaths in Argentina

Argentine Health Ministry sources announced the official number this morning: 337 deaths throughout the country are confirmed to be H1N1-related, while 400 more cases are being examined.

"The regular flu has been almost completely replaced by the H1N1 influenza," explained the Health Ministry spokesman. According to him, "93% of the flu cases are H1N1 cases."

Claudio Zin, the Buenos Aires province Health Minister announced earlier that the number of deaths in the country was "probably" reaching over 300, backing a number announced by local media.

"Fortunately, there is no sign of a new outbreak," he added. Zin confirmed the number of new cases have been decreasing in the last weeks. "The situation is much better than three weeks ago, but we stay very careful."

Three weeks ago, the official number of H1N1-related deaths was of 137. However, the official explained that the Abete hospital, in the Malvinas Argentinas district (Greater Buenos Aires) had 40 empty beds, confirming that the peak had passed.

Regarding the possibility of a coming vaccine, the provincial Health Minister said he didn't think it would be soon available. "I am not very optimistic about obtaining it very easily," he concluded.

Have you also noticed that states that were still allowing numbers of deaths to be released quit at the same time they were given millions from the federal government to fight swine flu. Ive noticed this connection but have not seen any reports from media about it yet.

Thailand reports 16 more A/H1N1-related deaths

BANGKOK, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Public Health Ministry on Wednesday announced 16 more deaths due to the A/H1N1 influenza infection, bringing the country's death toll to 81.

Of the total death cases, a large number of the victims died due to having congenital diseases with overweight problems, the ministry said.

Also, the victims went to see doctors too late after developingthe new flu, the ministry said. On average, after having had the new flu for five to six days, the victims went to see doctors.

Every Wednesday the Thai government schedules to announce the country's A/H1N1 outbreak situation, including the death toll.

State stays mum after H1N1 death

Details about deaths related to the H1N1 flu virus have been released in other states, so why not in Iowa?

When the Iowa Department of Public Health announced the state's first death attributed to the virus on Monday, it cited Iowa confidentiality laws, declining to provide any additional information about the case.

IDPH issued another press release Tuesday afternoon adding the victim was a middle-aged individual from eastern Iowa.

Reports on some H1N1 deaths in other states in recent weeks, however, have included specific information about the victim's age, gender, county of residency and whether they had other medical issues, among other facts.

When the third H1N1 death was recorded in Indiana last week, the state health department released the person's age, gender and the county of residence. Reports of an H1N1-related fatality in Wisconsin the week before, however, only included what county that person resided in.

"Every state has different laws," said Iowa's state epidemiologist Patricia Quinlisk, adding public health is a state function and not federal. "I know every state has information saying you cannot give out the name of a person or cannot allow a person to be identified."

For example, Quinlisk said, if an 11-year-old Hispanic boy dies of H1N1 in Los Angeles, the local health department may provide the information because thousands of people fit the description. If the same boy lived in a small Iowa county, the details wouldn't be released because the child could be identified.

Third B.C. person dies from H1N1 virus

A third person has died in B.C. from the H1N1 virus.

The person lived in the Fraser Health authority where all of B.C.'s fatalities lived.

To date, 634 individuals in British Columbia have tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus as of July 27 that has caused illness in the U.S., Mexico and dozens of other countries.

The death is believed to have occurred in the last week.

Argentina flu deaths double to 337

Swine flu deaths in Argentina have more than doubled in the past two weeks and now total 337, officials said Wednesday.

The figure, up from the previous count of 165, confirmed Argentina as the country with the second-highest swine flu fatality count in the world after the United States, which has 353 dead.

Argentina's deputy health minister Maximo Diosque said swine flu had almost totally replaced the normal seasonal flu in the country, which was in the southern hemisphere's winter.

More than 700,000 of the 763,000 flu cases detected in the country were of the A(H1N1) swine flu type, he said.

"We have confirmed 337 deaths by A(H1N1) flu,'' he said.

"We have a similar number, of around 400 cases, that are in the process of being confirmed.''

Although Argentina has reported almost as many deaths as the United States, its population is just a fraction of the latter, estimated at 40 million to the United States' 300 million.
