Man dies after opening-day fight

Witnesses say 27-year-old Brian Powers was fighting with a man when a third man joined the fight, according to the Anaheim Police Department. The third man reportedly approached Powers from behind, punching him in the head. Powers then fell and hit his head on a concrete step in a stairwell in the right-field pavilion.

Powers was pronounced brain dead at UC Irvine Medical Center Tuesday around midnight, and died at 12:23 a.m. today, according to Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez.

OK. Witnesses see this and do nothing to stop the 2? And this is in the middle of a crowded ballpark when everybody is on their feet leaving? This seems pretty fishy to me. I'd think they'd have tons of video and eye witnesses to identify the 2 who did this.

Adding another quote seeing as the submission system wants me to write an editorial on the story.

Police have not established a motive for the fight, but they are looking for two male suspects, aged 25-30 and both with goatees. They're also reviewing security videos that may have captured the attack, but are still searching for more information about the fight that led to the death of the Buena Park, Calif., man. "We're asking the public's help to find out what the fight was about," Martinez said.

It says they are reviewing the tapes.

It doesn't sound like a situation where one man was simply being beaten to death in which people would be expected to be pulling the killer off him. The report makes it sound more like a single unlucky blow to the back of the head was what did him in, or it was from falling and hitting his head on the concrete. Both of which could easily happen in any fight.

Also, people can be understandably reluctant to step in to break up a fight because: 1. most people probably don't know the circumstances or why the people are fighting (i.e. it may not be just a petty street fight), and 2. bystanders don't know what the people fighting are capable of (they could have weapons, etc), 3. anyone that has kids with them, the best thing to do is just leave.

I mean, yeah, if someone is being savagely beaten, I would hope some folks would try to stop it, but like I said, doesn't sound like this was the case.
