I definitely remember reading something in New Scientist that is vaguely appropriate. Some geneticists have discovered the gene which supresses
mutations. When they turn it off, so that it stops expressing, all the mutations that that creatures ancestors have developed are expressed in its
children. They had only carried the experiment out with fruit flies and nematodes and simple stuff like that, but they apparently produced an
incredible diversity of mutants. Each flies family had developed different mutations, and so the offspring varied wildly.
