Update :

Talk on twitter:

Gotsound said: "Apparently the whole Sydney CBD all the way to Central are currently on diesel power generator. I hear firetruck alarms all over the place."

Xorprime said: "No power here in Bond St as well as there is a smoke coming out from the Harbour view."

RT said: "Power just out in Wynyard. The trains are still running though."

NSW Police told news.com.au that some traffic lights were out at a few locations.

"We are not aware of the full extent of the outage," a spokesman said.

Fine here in St Leonards.

Not a big deal I say. This city has blackouts all the time.

I bet all those who turned their power off for earth hour are feeling a little ripped off, could have saved themselves some trouble and just accumulated blackout hours. a bit like carbon credits

Well they may be able to use the blackout credits for next year

Not bad weather or anything at the moment either..

Alien invasion? Is this how it starts? In the dark.

Or is it just another regular power outage? I am hoping for the former rather than the latter, but who's to say what is was, fresh doom seems like it is on the horizon, and this story excentuates just that.

Not sure whether the explosion at Bondi and blackout are related though.

In another completely unrelated event, this was 2 weeks ago on the 20th I believe. I was told by my mates who were in North Rocks (Inner western Sydney) that they saw a HUGE bright blue light emit from the power station then all power go out immediately. I was on my way maybe 20 min before and when I got there, police were everywhere - I suspected to prevent looting however they just kept driving around and around.

I don't think they are related, one was just a freak gas explosion, the blackout is just a byproduct of city life BUT the bikie thing...that is getting totally out of control, not just the bikies but a few stereo typical 'groups...I blame it on Australian tv being inundated with Crime/Gang Related Mini-Series and 'specials'...tis outta control for sure!

There is no need for tourists to be worried though....just beware of the crocs and sharks

Maybe that earth hour had something to do with it - the sudden drop in demand followed by an equally big leap in demand putting stresses on the power grid - it only takes a few transformers to blow to cause a rolling blackout if they don't get right on top of re-distributing the power.

Might be interesting if any more large scale blackouts occur in the next week, Earth hour could of actually been quite irresponsible!

I suggest those in Sydney are just jealous of all the nasty stuff happening in Melbourne at the moment, with all the fires and earthquakes.

...But I jest...

My wife and I have been talking about the increase in the frequently of weird stuff is happening in Austalia. Fires, floods, earthquakes, whale beaching's, Kevin Rudd popluarity, all seem to be off the scale.

p.s. You Sydney ATS'ers are alright by me!
