I don't know where they got 3 mllion folks. Must be the same folks who estimated the million man march. You did have folks protesting all over the country, albiet mostly in small groups. In Paris, traffic was typical, the metro ran perfectly well as it always does. I walked down the Champs Elysee twice and was down at Concord, Latin Quarter, Opera district and outside the entire day. Nothing. On the local news here it was a 2 minute story, probably less than you got on the NCAA tourney and definately less than you got on the great one's Leno appearance.

Actually, they are complaining about taxes. The issue with the G20 right now is that Sarkozy and Merkel are not going to pump more money into their economy because they know that they will need to raise taxes to retire the debt. They feel that they have pumped enough in. They are not pushing a greater expansion of the government - they've already done that, thank you. Essentially their view is that this is a US problem, they've done their bit and to the extent that the US is looking to migrate to a European social model, then we'll need to migrate to a tax structure akin to theirs.

The folks in the street that are protesting are malcontents. What Sarkozy is looking at is 2019 and beyond. Right now, young French citizens can't get jobs because business won't hire. They won't hire because they have extremely limited flexibility in how they manage the unionized labor force. What Sarkozy is trying to do is both create a model where young folks can get jobs and the French business sector can be enfused with a bit more spark so that they can create new jobs and new products for the future. The issue is similar to any labor beef. If I can have folks work as many hours as they want to work, the person who is only willing to work 35 hours a week is clearly less valuable, given equal skills and ability. That gent does not want to see folks who are coming in willing to work 50 hours a week. You also have the full employment crowd,who like the 35 hour work week because they feel that it enables more folks to obtain work. Well clearly that does not work with a national unemployment rate of over 10% and an unemployment rate of folks under 25 close to 25%.
