OBAMA - increase in VA funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-CA) provided the following statement on President Obama's Budget Outline for the Department of Veterans Affairs for Fiscal Year 2010:

"I applaud President Obama's budget request for the Department of Veterans Affairs. After sixteen years on the Veterans' Affairs Committee, I am very encouraged that this outline is consistent with recommendations made by the veterans' groups who co-author the Independent Budget. This has never happened in the 23-year history of the IB!"

"This budget request will increase funding for VA by 15% this year and by $25 billion over the next five years, including a proposed $4.9 billion increase for Fiscal Year 2010. After years of funding neglect and budget shortfalls, I commend President Obama on this honest assessment of the funding needs of the VA.

The February 19 meeting of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Advisory Committee on Homeless Veterans in Washington, D.C., was, by all accounts, one of the most historic events in the 20-year history of the homeless veteran assistance movement represented by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.

Record funding levels for veteran-specific programs, development of housing initiatives for homeless and low-income veterans, the expansion of programs for women, and VA's evolving focus on homelessness prevention were outlined by officials from VA and the Departments of Labor, Defense, and Housing and Urban Development.

Since 2002, the Advisory Committee submits an annual report to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs with recommendations on how to better serve the nation's former guardians who are struggling to reclaim control of their lives and re-enter society as productive citizens. Currently chaired by NCHV Chairman of the Board George Basher, the committee began its business by welcoming the new Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric K. Shinseki.

I think this is a good move which has been promised for far to long.

Wasn't it just a couple of days ago that the stories surfaced that Obama wanted vets to pay for some of their service related injuries out of pocket or have the VA reimbursed via the vet's private insurance?? All to save money?

And, now, this comes out with a date of 2-26-09?? And, no more saving money, but spending more (which is a good thing, btw)??

Please don't read into what I wrote and interpret it in your own way.

I never said that this story was BS. It seems like everything coming out of this administration is contradicted a few days later by something totally different about the same subject.

More money for the VA at the end of February......let's make private insurance reimburse the VA for combat-related injuries to save money earlier this week (March).

We didn't know about the bonuses......we knew all about the bonuses.

The fundamentals of the economy suck......the fundamentals in our economy are strong.

I can't keep up because they contradict themselves every other day, it seems.

This is wonderful. Really. For decades we have sent soldiers off to war, they've come back with PTSD, and we've let them land on skid row.

Combat injuries aren't the problem: flashbacks, alcoholism, and substance abuse are the problem.

one thing nobody has been able to answer is "what is the context in which the new bill states veterans should have to use private insurance ot help pay for part of _______ "


what i mean is, in the wonderful world of politics, the oposiing side will take one thing to use against the other side of the aisle, and twist it and manipluate it to make it appear it's something that it's really not.

Example: Is it only in circumstances of drug abuse? In that case, i believe private insurance should be necessary. I don't mind my tax dollars to pay for your prosthesis, but my tax dollars shouldn't pay for your hallucinations to "forget about the pain"

Everyone deals with issues in their own way, and if you're drinking yours away, or puffing them in up in some smoke, or needles, wtf ever, i truly do not feel sorry for you, further more, my money shouldnt pay for your treatment.
