Turkey Hosts NATO military exercise (13-30 March)

turkishnavy.blogspot.com

This week a multinational military exercise called Egemen-2009, will start in Turkey. There is absolutely nothing on the Turkish news and defence portals about this exercise and about the participants except the fact that this exercise will happen. Therefore it is very difficult to determine the exact order of battle.Among the participants are Taurus 2009 task force of Royal Navy, undisclosed Dutch, French and US warships.10 of these warships, 5 Dutch, 4 US and 1 British, are in Aksaz Naval Base.

According to the website of the Turkish General Staff, Egemen 2009 military exercises occur from March 13 to 30.

Unlike the other military exercises in Turkey which get limited press coverage, it is rather clandestine. This inevitably makes one wonder as to whether it is a war game for a planned conflict in the Middle East in the near future...

Just to add a brief note, in case anyone is wanting to put a spin on this....joint training exercises have been held in Turkey since before 9/11 happened. They also have held joint NATO training in Canada, (also before 9/11). I don't know how long they have actually been going on, but the first time I became aware of them was about 1998-ish.

Not sure if that makes any difference, but just wanted to throw it in.

well dont you agree a little to much training is going on in these days.

china next to N and Z korea

turkey next to paskistan\iran.

also this not being in the news although you state it is normal trainig doesn;t make sence...if this would be the case the news would say the " Yearly"
blabla is comming up again... nothing is just... suspicious..?
or are we just supposed to know?

I honestly don't know if they are "yearly", and I tend to lean towards "no" on that. Each one may be different with different objectives, different countries participating, so that could also be an issue. Again, just throwing in what little I DO know. The last one I was aware of in 1998-ish, was a training exercise in Turkey that lasted for about 3 months. Something like that wouldn't have to be repeated yearly.

Nothing to do with the Middle East.
As far as the Americans, British, Dutch are concerned, this is just a normal NATO exercise.
As far as the Turks are concerned, they will try and push the limits of the Greek Military during these exercises as they are taking place in the Aegean Sea, majority of which is under Greek control as most inhabited islands are inhabited by Greeks and said islands were liberated during war of independence or given back to Greece by third parties, ie Italy, under treaty.

So in that regard it is not a normal NATO training exercise, but it is not related to the Middle East. If it were a normal exercise, solely for the purpose of joint NATO training, then the Hellenic Navy would be taking part.
But Turkey has other ideas.

Turkey has stated that basically it WILL push the envelope as far as they can regarding maritime borders in the Aegean during this exercise, and the Greek government has responded by warning Turkey.

Since December Turkey has increased it's violations of Greek airspace and the Athens Flight Information Region(FIR). They have increased armed over flights of inhabited islands, some over flights occurring as low as 100ft. There have been several instances were locals even fishermen on their boats have captured footage of Turkish jets inside Greek airspace. Tension has risen to new levels. The Turks have again tried to search for oil in Greek waters, however a Greek patrol boat turned a Turkish frigate and the Norwegian exploration vessel away. The Norwegians later apologised for their mistake.

For those who are unaware, Turkey disputes Greek sovereignty in the Aegean Sea. This is despite Turkey many decades ago putting it's signature to treaties and such declaring which islands belong to who. And may I add, that there are at least two islands which were supposed to be handed to Greece which have not been - Yet the Greek government is making no move to acquire those islands either by force or by diplomatic legal avenues. What's done is done. However Turkey sees thing's differently.

To give you an idea..imagine Greece disputing Turkish sovereignty half way to Ankara, and sending armed and unarmed fighter jets and recon planes to violate the Turkish airspace in that area, and then on top of that, creating things called Grey Zones, which only it recognises and even speaks of.
Then imagine Greece sent in drilling teams to search for oil in the said areas.

Would Turkey accept this? Would NATO and the EU accept it?

But the unfortunate thing is, is that Turkey is in a strategic place on the map. So for as long as America has no alternative air base besides Incirlik, they will continue turning a blind eye to the outright aggression of one NATO member(TURKEY) to another NATO member(GREECE).

I don't know why you guys are expecting this to be in your local news, unless you live in Turkey or Greece, which this is on the news in both.

NATO In The Persian Gulf From Third World War To the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative
by Rick Rozoff, Global Research, 7 February 2009

The NATO summit held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on June 28-29, 2004 was nothing less than epochal in terms of its geopolitical repercussions, where several historical thresholds were crossed and post-World War II international taboos violated.

Some of the decisions reached at the summit were commented upon in the world press at the time as the precedents they were, but the implementation of the same has in the interim come to be accepted as not only an accomplished fact but as within the natural and inevitable nature of things.

The multifaceted expansion plans formalized by NATO at the summit will be dealt with separately below and major emphasis will be directed to that least examined aspect, the eponymous Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.
On January 3 of this year Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Adm. Luciano Zappata was obliging enough to issue this statement:

"The vast dimension of the emerging area of responsibility and interest covers traditional NATO borders, but also ranges from the Strait of Bering to Norway and Estonia; from the Bosphorus-Dardanell es, the Gibraltar Strait and the Mediterranean Sea to the High North; and from the Suez Canal to the Red Sea, Horn of Africa, the Arabian Sea and Persian Gulf – and possibly beyond." (NATO International, Allied Command Transformation, February 3, 2009)

This is taking part in the Aegean Sea and is for all intents and purposes an overwhelmingly Naval Exericse.

Pretty bad practice for any ground & pound fighting in the Middle East wouldn't you say?

Sensationalism abounds once again. Turkey has been a NATO member since 1952 and have participated in a ton of NATO exercises to date.

This is nothing out of the ordinary.

And you guys are here expecting NATO not to be tight-lipped about it's military exercises in the current geo-political climate?

What do you want a public demonstration?
