Roads closed amid security alert near army base

news.bbc.co.uk

Roads around Ballykinler have been closed including the Tullymurry Straight which runs from Downpatrick to Clough.

Vehicle check-points have been set up in the area and motorists are asked to take alternative routes. Ballykinler is the site of a large British Army base. Last month, a car bomb found in Castlewellan was said to have been destined for the base.

Not sure if there has been a shooting or something far worse, but checkpoints have been implemented and reports of an "incident" has occurred in the area.

Certain sources are reporting a major "hoax device" but others are reporting an actual incident. But for checkpoints to be in place suggest this is pretty serious. Cars are being stopped in the area and moved to other areas.

Only this morning, security forces warned of a bombing campaign occurring once again in Northern Ireland.

The weekend killings at the Army barracks in Antrim have been described as a “classic assassination” — demonstrating a degree of training or a degree of experience on the part of the gunmen.

Belfast Telegraph

The link above also mentions the bomb threat and Real IRA.

I am from Texas so have no idea if this is the base to which you referred.

No, its near the border with the Irish Republic.

A "device" has been found under a bridge near the base. No reports on its structure, etc.
