Several people dead in German school shooting - Gunman still at large

edition.cnn.com

(CNN) -- A gunman killed at least five people when he opened fire at a school in southwest Germany on Wednesday morning, police said.

Several others were wounded in the shooting in the small town of Winnenden, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Stuttgart.

Police spokesman Herr Brenner said the exact number of casualties was not known, but more than five people had died.

The shootings happened at the Albertville-Realschule Winnenden school, a junior high school, about 9:30 a.m.

Authorities launched an intense manhunt for the gunman, police said. Reuters.com reported Bild newspaper as saying the man was wearing combat fatigues during the attack

Winnenden, with a population of about 28,000, straddles the past and the present with structures dating to the 16th century.

Just heard on CNN breaking news that 9 people are dead and that several others are wounded in the school-shooting in Winnenden in Germany - Gunman still at large.

Just after the church shooting in Alabama, we now see another school-shooting.

Now these kind of shootings occur here in Europe as well, they are rare but are on the rise since a few years back.

It makes you wonder if these shootings will spread like wildfires through copycats?

These shootings against school-children are soo terrible, let's just hope they take the guy before he kill more innocent children.

Could this be a sign of times now with all the economical hardships people are going through?

It sure feels like something is in the air!

But desperate shooting rampage against innocent people and children, is always soo terrible and very sad!

I don't see how desperation can make anyone do something like this, desperation at what?

It's just absolutely sick.. there's no valid reason fo this EVER. This is why we need corporal punishment again, and it should be painful and frightening - just like what he's put all those poor people through.

Many German schools are filled with violence and brutality, and there is a rather big problem getting it under control. Some cant defend themselves, get bullied day by day, till they only have revenge in mind, and the outcome can be seen above.

Although they probably blame it on computer games, like all the other shootings that happened here in Germany.

They just reported he died in a shootout with the police. They finally caught him in the parking area of a shopping mall. Before being caught, though, he shot another person while trying to get away from the police.
