I saw something about this on the TV a couple weeks ago and figured id do some searching around the net about it. This is old news (from 2004), but still very interesting.

Its funny to think that something so abundant 50 light years away has so much value here. It also kind of makes the diamond not seem so precious. I now wonder why people get so excited about some crystallized carbon.




"You would need a jeweller's loupe the size of the Sun to grade this diamond," says astronomer Travis Metcalfe, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, who led the team of researchers that discovered it.
