We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology. C.Sagan.

Technology is just a thin veneer on, tribal, brutal, ego driven savages.
If a cataclysmic event occurred and the infrastructure disintegrated; survival of the fittest mode would kick in in a matter of weeks after the initial shock had worn off and reality set in.
In the grand scheme of things only some people have evolved; the vast majority are closer to savages that have the ability to use tools but conceptualize very little.
It's a brave new world, welcome to the monkey house.

Plus, depending on the level of the event, it's not like people would forget how to do things. I mean, it would take a near extinction level event to push people back to a more primitive state.

So deep in fact that I would not be surprised if the survival of the fittest instinct in many has been perverted to apply solely to material well-being, security, and comfort. We've been softened and divorced from our natural instincts and desires to an incredible extent. We're sensitive to things we shouldn't be sensitive to and hardened to things we should be more intuitive about.

I don't think anyone can accurately say to what extent technology has infested humans. Yeah, you get Oprah and a couple doctors on tv talking about how video games and the internet reduce kids' communication abilities in social settings but I'm of the opinion that it goes much deeper than this.
