hello everyone. I have a 15 month old daughter my first child. When i found out i was pregnant i did everything i could to benefit the child growing inside. Well i was one of the people that thought if i banked my baby's cord blood she would benefit. banking cord blood is basically taking the umbilical cord blood and storing it and using it like stem cells to help cure diseases and possibly hundreds more in the future. Well after i submitted my application i received a packet to fill out. The questions they asked i thought some were nonsense others were legitimate. well once the "kit" arrived that we had to take to the hospital with us i was terrified not of the birth of the baby but of all the blood the company had to take from me...i just thought that was weird i mean one tube should be enough right not 4 or 5 i can't remember the total but it was somewhere near there. Well after that i didn't think much of it. the courier came took the "kit" with all the pertinent blood info from myself and my daughter. Well a few months ago i received a letter stating that if my daughter is one of the chosen samples they would be doing experiment type of things with it to help cure something similar to osteoporosis at a well known college lab. I don't know at the time i was just thinking about the health and future of my child. After all the blood they took from me and the questionnaire i had to fill out about myself and spouse and our immediate family such as parents and grandparents. once the letter came i just immediately starting having some thoughts like could they possibly clone my daughter or me from all the samples. could the company be doing something sinister with the info and blood. After reading and re-reading all my paperwork from the company i think technically they own all the rights to her blood we just rent the center or bank where they keep it. i guess they can do whatever they like with it from experimenting or using it for other things as long as they save some for her in case god forbid she would need it one day. I never really got an answer on why they needed all of my blood. maybe i am just going to far with the whole idea of it but i guess at the time i had my brain boggled from being pregnant and not thinking clearly. i just couldn't imagine them doing testing on the blood we provided which you don't find out until after you have submitted the blood. or maybe i just read too much on ats to think clearly anymore lol
oh yeah before i forget if you call them for info they will do anything pretty much to get you to sign up cut some fees or whatever they need to do to get you on board. its only after you sign up that you get info not before. and if you dont want to do it after they have the blood you still have to pay everything as if you did keep it but the kicker is they still get the blood! here is a few links to some sites that promote saving cord blood. Anyone's thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated! oops sorry i think i posted this in the wrong area.

I think it is great that science has come so far that they can store cord blood to possibly save the child's life in the future, but just like any organization you pay who knows what they are really doing with your product/ information.

Well I can't say you're being overly paranoid... After all I think the USA is one of the few countries in the world that hasn't banned cloning.

But I have to say kudos for signing up. I've heard the stem cells from cord blood (and other 'birth stuff') is supposedly responsible for more advances in medicine than the other way of collecting stem cells (which we won't talk about). Thanks for the information on what you've gone through and keep us updated until the army of brown eyed girl babies bears down upon us.

yeah i thought it was great too just because of the medical advances. It wasn't until afterwards that i started to have thoughts about what they were doing with all the extra samples. Cloning was just one of the things that came to my overly paranoid mind lol. I hope there will not be an army of brown eyed babies i don't know if i could handle that much paranoia and worst case scenario theories lol
