Krugman won because of the collapse of the financial system. Before the collapse, Krugman wasn't even on the radar, and the front-runner was a man
who spent his career working in efficient-market theories.
Krugman called the collapse, and with everybody running around like madmen, Krugman was handed the Nobel Prize.
