Oh I forgot to add... We are actually moving at the speed of light right now! Trick is you have to ask weather your moving through space or time, space - well we ain't got a chance just yet... and Einstein only said that nothing moves faster than light through space... But we also travel through time, and well we always have been travelling at the exact same speed of light.

Good eh?

Maybe thought goes faster then the speed of light. Thought is instant. You do not even have to think about something to do it.

No. If you were going light speed you would arrive at your destination in an instant (from your perspective).

Know what amazes me? Several links in this thread to things that go faster than light, a great many replicable experiments that have shown light going "faster than light", replicable experiments showing microwaves going "faster than light" (yes, technically those two are the same thing), experiments where music was broadcast "faster than light", and yet people on here going "Nothing goes faster than light!". All those things can be looked up and verified in several minutes.

I guess they don't let the evidence get in the way of their theories.

i see that answer. but lets say your destination is far enough away to use them.

Perhaps, sir_chancealot, these people don't depend merely on things that can be 'looked up and verified in several minutes'. If you get your knowledge of physics from the popular media (which includes, emphatically, the World Wide Web), you'll be full of information about things that go faster than light. But if you ever actually studied physics in a formal way and later kept up with it in that context, and knew (for example) what relativity really means, you might know something different.

Same goes for for Now_Then (what is it with these guys? Have they got an underscore to settle with me?) Most physicists would agree with what I said in the post you chose to deride.

I dont think thought is instant, its little electrical bursts, given the various parts of the brain and millions of neurons firing and interconnecting to make a thought it wouldn't be that fast compared to light.

Quantum entanglement is not really moving, its entangled particals reacting instantaniously to each other.

The reason for quantum entanglement being such a threat to Einstien's theory is because quantum entanglement is nonlocal, meaning it doesn't have an effect on anything between the two particals. Whereas everything else we know is local.

YES!!! Study quantum physics, specifically quantum entaglement (en.wikipedia.org...) and you will see we have know about faster than light movement since Einstein. He posed the EPR paradox as a thought experiment to disprove quantum physics. But when Niels Bohr actually did the experiment, and many have since.

Yes.

Thought.

i like where you're going with this, but unfortunately both perception and thought are functions of time.

the only thing which is above time, and what you really meant to say is:

exsistence (knowledge).

...erm. lets try that one again:

"If you were going light speed you would BE at your destination RIGHT NOW!" (which coincidentally is exactly where you are!). in other words, we are already moving at the speed of light.

there is a reason that metaphysics and spirituality constantly focus on "beingness", as it is the only thing which transcends time.

this is why the quantum fabric out of which our 3rd dimension is formed exists in 1 dimension. before the time (quantum) function has acted upon it, it is a unified beingness....from which all things, including your own conciousness, emerges.

"The speed of light" is a pretty absolute limit, as long as it is used within the theoretical paradigm it was created from. Some things exist, however, that have nothing to do with the particular theoretical framework in which light is measured.

"Happiness," for instance. Does happiness exist? Sure. But how fast does it go? It doesn't exist in the same way that we perceive mass and energy and light, so it doesn't make any sense to talk about it going fast.

Or how about your point-of-view. How fast does it go? Everything that lives has a particular point-of-view -- how we perceive existence from the backside of our own eyeballs. It exists, right? Of course. But it also has nothing to do with going from Point A to Point B in a particular designated length of time.

So there are things that exist that are outside the narrow definitions created with physics and mathematics. And even with those definitions, some of the parameters are based on common assumptions and conventions. The whole notion of "time," to begin with. That's a very fuzzy concept, and one which will only give you certain answers depending on the questions you devise. Or method of measuring time is crude, and strangely dependent on other, non-physical things such as perception.

So, no, there is nothing faster than the speed of light. But it all kind of depends on what you mean by "fast," or "speed."

In 1985 I was 15 years old and I had a Science teacher that asked us to write a paper on "Abstract Theories" My theory was that the speed of light was not finite. In my Theory if you got two massive gravitational fields very close to each other then they in Theory could squeeze light and thus make it faster. Kinda like when you squeeze a water hose and the water came out faster.

I got a A for that paper, not for scientific fact rather for an interesting Theory. So in that case Light could actually be faster then the speed of light.

Chew on that of a bit.

hmm nice theory. But lets say a car is travelling at a particular speed and you squeeze it, does it speed up? No? Of course not.

The reason water speeds up when you squeeze a hose is because you increase the pressure behind the water. It is not some magical way of increasing energy.

Therefore no I do not believe that light speeds up if you squeeze it any more than I believe a car will speed up if you squeeze it (unless the car has pressure behind it and you increase the pressure by squeezing it).

Edit: chew on that for a bit

I particularly like the work advocated, and done, by the late Tom Van Flandern. The following articles are specifically related to the 'speed limit' question in which the authors comes to some startiling conclusions about the speed at which gravity must propagate to account for known celestial interaction.

What is light? just waves right? Possibly something in those waves is what the answer is.

What makes the light travel????? that is probably what is faster than light.

At the subatomic level ( i know not much of this ) wouldn't whatever makes light have to react or be active with some other particle to make light travel?

Whatever is smaller than a light wave maybe or whatever allows light to travel that is smaller than it , those reactions would have to come first as a command to the light.

So theoretically yes something is faster than light, but we can't comprehend or just haven't found it yet.

If that's the case then brace yourself for impact because the instant they shine on something that same instant you go splat... Don't worry you probably won't feel it.
